Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World

2024 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards Finalist in Adventure, Sports & Recreation

A Zen study wrapped in a memoir of destruction and healing written by an elite ultrarunner as she struggles to make it to the other side of a life-shattering injury with her sanity, and her marriage, intact

After flipping her raft days away from help on a trip down the remote Salmon River, Katie Arnold’s shattered leg tests both her spirit and her marriage for years to come. It also reignites her meditation practice and motivates her to dive into Zen in search of healing. Before the accident, Katie was an elite ultrarunner with a simmering but adequate marriage who avoided being indoors whenever possible. But who is she afterwards?

In the midst of hardship, Katie turns for support to the Zen practice she had long dabbled in. Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World is a Zen study wrapped in a memoir that tells the story of a search for stillness by a woman born for wildness. Spanning roughly two years, from shortly before the accident through the long, uncertain healing of both leg and marriage, it is a personal narrative of that tumultuous time nested inside meditations on Zen.

Having gone from a reluctant spiritualist to a Zen practitioner over the course of a decade, Katie Arnold offers unique company for those seeking nature’s exquisite highs as well as for creatives, spiritualists, and sensualists who want to slow down and examine the possibilities of a well-lived life. As the late Japanese master Shunryu Suzuki wrote, “Sometimes a flashing will come through the dark sky.” These brief flashings are enlightenment—moments when we suddenly feel as if we’re part of everything, and everything’s part of us. This book is about how to experience the flashings when they come, and about what they mean for how we live our lives.

A tender account of mothering, marriage and Zen
This beautiful personal account of Zen according to a mom, runner and wife was so brilliant I could hardly put it down. Having loved Katie’s book Running Home, I waited with great anticipation for this book to come out and was not disappointed. Katie’s way of seeing the world, understanding her own place in it and how she relates to it and her physical body and in her mind is so wild, it’s almost as if she enters a dimension that is entirely her own–her non-training training for Leadville and the account of her overcoming injury in the wild to get there is both tender and fierce at once. Woven through that are the accounts of daily mothering and marriage that we all face and so no matter if you are a runner or a meditator, much like Running Home, there is so much rich inspiration to glean from this book that it is hard not to read it all at once. I’m looking forward to my second reading of this special book.

    Zen, running, writing, and adversity
Katie Arnold offers a deeper dive into the interrelationship of Zen, writing, and running as she overcomes a major injury and achieves victory at the Leadville Trail 100-mile run. But this is much more than a tale of how to meditate, train, and win. The major rafting accident that nearly ended her running career placed tremendous stress on her marriage, she was raising two young daughters, and she continued to deal with the anxiety seen in her previous “Running Home”. Her writing style is clear and succinct, drawing the reader deeply into her psyche. Endurance athletes in particular will be entranced by this book. A memorable read.

    Beautifully written
I was astounded by this book. As someone who loves to be active in the outdoors, it was one of those rare books that resounded with me so deeply, it felt like the author was reading my thoughts – yet simultaneously gave me a completely new way of thinking about the world. The writing is clear, succint and flowing like the natural scenes it describes. I was inspired by the author’s strength, resiliency and the use of her zen practice to overcome a major setback in her life. Highly recommend.

    Inspiring, adventurous, philosophical, beautifully written
I am totally blown away by this book, just launched by Katie Arnold, an inspiration to so many. I have just started it, and I am already dreading having it not accompany my days. It is a story of adventure, zen, writing, running, motherhood, struggle, life, marriage, and ultimately triumph.Run, don’t walk to get a copy (today!) to make it the NYT bestseller that it should be.

A profound look at running, life, and the life of the body/mind.
Katie Arnold hits it out of the park again in her second book, this time focusing more on her discovery and dive into meditation, Zen Buddhism and running. I was excited to finally hear her account of winning the Leadville 100 ultra marathon. Find your flow and let go!

    Well-written, but unwise
This is a well-written book, but the author spends a lot of her time running and training and very little time with her young family. She doesn’t cook; she admits she doesn’t like cleaning. Buddhism is about the dissolution of the ego, but this author is very attached to her ego: her running ability, her friendship with a famous author (in Zen circles), her writing. She is in fact a good writer, but I’m glad I don’t know her as a person. I’m quite sure I would agree with her stepfather that she spends altogether too much time running and needs to be more helpful.
