Things Don’t Break on Their Own: A Novel

“So, so, so good. An elegant, twisting story of loss and longing, of the ache of the unknown and the drowning weight of past trauma.”—Chris Whitaker, New York Times bestselling author of All the Colors of the Dark

EDGAR AWARD FINALIST • A BOOKPAGE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • A WASHINGTON POST AND BLOOMBERG BEST BOOK OF THE SEASON

A heart-wrenching mystery about sisters, lovers, and a dinner party gone wrong.

Twenty-five years ago, a young girl left home to walk to school. Her younger sister soon followed. But one of them arrived, and one of them didn’t.

Her sister’s disappearance has defined Willa’s life. Everyone thinks her sister is dead, but Willa knows she isn’t. Because there are some things that only sisters know about each other—and some bonds only sisters can break.

Willa sees fragments of her sister everywhere—the way that woman on the train turns her head, the gait of that woman in Paris. If there’s the slightest resemblance, Willa drops everything, and everyone, and tries to see if it is her.

When Willa is invited to a dinner party thrown by her first love, she has no reason to expect it will be anything other than an ordinary evening. Both of them have moved on, ancient history. But nothing about Willa’s life has been ordinary since the day her sister disappeared, and that’s not about to change tonight.

Sarah Easter Collins has written an extraordinary novel about memory, lost love, and long-buried secrets that sometimes see the light of day.

Poignant story of life, loss, love
This story makes me think of how many people harbor so many secrets about their lives because of the trauma and sorrow inflicted on them and stays with them for their entire life.

I wanted to love this book…
It was a bit confusing and all over the place. The story line was great, I just feel like it executed well. I really enjoyed Laika’s story, but then it just wasn’t believable. I felt the end was rushed. I kept waiting for the climax, and I got one for a few chapters then it went back to flat. I hate leaving negative reviews, but I just needed more of something.

    slow to start but…
Worth the read – throughout the telling of the story you will hinge between sadness, anger and frustration. Each character adds its own dimension to the story.

    continually kept me wondering
As an elder, picking up on subtleties is no longer my forte. Collins kept me trying to understand who the characters were, how they differed from each other – but not Willa. Collins chapters flowed one into another, and I could not put this book down. I was taken in by the story.

    Pretty good
Overall, this was pretty good. It was a bit confusing until I figured the repetitions were the same story being recollected from different perspectives. I took off one star for that.

3 – 3.5 🌟It was ok, I wouldn’t say it’s a thriller, but ok.Sometimes the throwbacks were boring for me, they could have been much shorter; a hundred pages less would have been ideal 😅The good thing is that I was able to connect with all the characters and the book has awakened different emotions in me. But it’s not really a thriller, there are no plot twists (just a revelation); it’s a drama…

Oh my gosh this has to be the best book I’ve read this year. Well rounded thought out characters with a deeply intimate insight from each one.My only criticism is at the start we seem to be introduced to too many all at once. An intriguing story line that is a page turner!I really hope the author keeps writing.
