The Lightning Rod: A Zig & Nola Novel

“Nola is the most accomplished kicker of ass since The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” —A. J. Finn

Zig and Nola are back—in the hugely entertaining, highly anticipated follow-up to Brad Meltzer’s #1 New York Times bestselling thriller The Escape Artist.

What’s the one secret no one knows about you?

Archie Mint has a secret. He’s led a charmed life—he’s got a beautiful wife, two impressive kids, and a successful military career. But when he’s killed while trying to stop a robbery in his own home, his family is shattered—and then shocked when the other shoe drops. Mint’s been hiding criminal secrets none of them could have imagined.

While working on Mint’s body before his funeral, mortician “Zig” Zigarowski discovers something he was never meant to see. That telling detail leads him to Mint’s former top secret military unit and his connection to artist Nola Brown. Two years ago, Nola saved Zig’s life—so he knows better than most that she’s as volatile and dangerous as a bolt of lightning.

Following Nola’s trail, he uncovers one of the U.S. government’s most intensely guarded secrets—an undisclosed military facility that dates back to the Cold War and holds the key to something far more sinister: a hidden group willing to compromise the very safety and security of America itself.

Trouble always finds her…

She’s the lightning rod.

Excellent read! Thriller from the first page!!
The second Zig and Nola novel was more an exciting thriller than the first “The Escape Artist”! Love the way Meltzer finally made Nola personable and more an individual in which one can relate. I knew she was more than the kick backside kind of a person Meltzer first made her out to be. She’s a woman and this novel brought that out almost to tears. Not to disclose the ending but it’s another classic Meltzer stunner. Looking forward to the third Zig/Nola novel in the trilogy but pre-order at $35 dollars for a paperback is a little too much!! Went with two others instead, “The Tenth Justice” and “Dead Even” until the third Zig/Nola is published.

    Surprisingly haunting
7 ways to Sunday how everyone was connected. It seems like every thing is done and resolved when up pops a new link. Sometimes a little slow but overall an interesting plot and good story. Interested in reading what comes next.

    great story
Very well developed characters. Fairly complex story line to keep you interested and guessing. Multiple plot lines that do get resolved. Recommended

    ok read
I love Brad Meltzer, but this book just did not capture me like his other books. The characters just didn’t seem real to me.

    An Apt Title
Brad Meltzer has never disappointed me. His plots, so well conceived and written, keep me engaged and I’ll never turn down the chance to read one. I started this book thinking the title only referred to the U.S. Military . . . standing tall to protect its citizenry. However, I came to understand that both Zig and Nola are lightning rods, too. Although complex and complicated characters, they do not hesitate to stand up and protect those who are righteously in need.

Kicks off with a bang and never slows down
The first chapter is a gripping, edge of your seat beginning of the book that immediately hooks you in. It’s a fast page turner filled with witty banter that reads like a screenplay. while still giving you all the backstory and character development to really get to know Zig, Nola and all the other characters in the book. He give you a deep sense of empathy, understanding and depth for every character (the protagonists and the criminals alike) so all of the outrageous actions feel very justified. While it’s a book of fiction, Brad is also the creator of History Channel’s “Decoded” and “Lost History”, so he makes sure to integrate some fascinating, unknown facts about America as well that is a very unique way to tell the story. While it helps to read the prior book, “The Escape Artist” this one also stands along and you could read this one first too. I’ve read all of Brad’s adult books and this one is my favorite (I also saw that James Patterson agreed with me on that one!).

good read with a quick start
Another good mystery with multiple subplots and good character development. Flawed but likeable characters. Hope to see more in this series.

I can hear Brad Meltzer narrating …Nothing is left unexplained leaving the reader for answers that will never come while navigating through wicked unexpected twists and turns.

A great book for those that love intrigue. Parts of the book might have been bolstered with a faster pace. Don’t get me wrong, there is action. Some of it did not pass believability standards. Author may telegraph or explain too much. Overall, it is a very unique story with interesting characters. I think Zig is too much of a pushover, though. Maybe a little too much on the flashbacks as well. The Lightning Rod is the second book in the Zig & Nola series.
