Huba Kelemen –
well, everything great twisted story
This book is written, very skillfully. I really enjoyed the wording and the setting… At some point it feels like it’s getting way too complicated. You no longer know who is who… But just keep reading by the end everything will become clear! Looking forward to reading some other stuff from this author.

Digging up the past……
Well, wow. What a story. It had many twists and turns, yet it was somewhat a story more about love, family, trust and relationships. There is no love stronger than what a mother feels for her child. Saffron and her long term boyfriend are 24 years old and find themselves expecting a baby- albeit unplanned but happy nonetheless. This young couple found each other while in University and they have a very pure, trusting and loving relationship. True love. Saffy as they call her, is a bit of an old soul. Her carefree mother Lorna had her when she was only 16 years old. Saffy was always closer with her grandmother Rose. Sadly when Rose begins losing her memories, and forgetting basic things like taking care of the dog, Saffy and her mom decide it’s time she goes to a nursing home. Before she goes, Rose tells Lorna that she has a cottage in a very small village that is all hers, the deed is in her name. Lorna lives in Spain and not interested so she gives the cottage to her daughter. Saffy & her bf jump at the opportunity as it’s the answer to their prayers with a baby on the way. The cottage is very old and outdated so they decide to expand the kitchen. They have escavators on the property digging the backyard – garden in British terms- and low and behold they find skeletons. And that’s where the story truly begins. The past gets dug up figuratively and literally. What was Rose hiding? Why does Lorna live in Spain? How is Saffy dealing with all of this? Guess you’ll have to read to find out. This is a good read. It’s not your typical psychological thriller but there is mystery and drama. Definitely recommend.

Too slow at times
Wanted to like this but it was just ok. Dragged and had one major twist but not enough to hold my interest. It was ok but not great

Beautifully written.
I love the secrets and twists n turns. Though I did figure out the biggest one rather early it was intriguing enough to read on and see how it all unfolded.

A Gripping Page Turner!
The Couple at Number Nine” by Claire Douglas is an absolutely captivating read that had me hooked from the very first page! The intricate plot, combined with the well-developed characters, created a thrilling atmosphere that I couldn’t get enough of. Each character brought something unique to the story, making it hard to choose a favorite.I found myself deeply invested in their lives and choices, and I truly wished the book had kept going! The way Douglas crafted their relationships and the twists and turns of the narrative left me wanting more. If you’re looking for a book that blends suspense with rich character development, this is the one! Highly recommend to anyone who loves a good psychological thriller!

Original
plot and storyline. The characters were so well constructed and personable. I found the story to be interesting throughout and thought the author did a great job of revealing points at the right time.
Hazel Desmond –
Really enjoyed this book. I had not read this author before but it was recommended. I loved it. Lots of twists and turns and the author doesn’t keep repeating things all the time. I am now on another book of hers and will work my way through them all.
Amazon Customer –
The book is an absolutely gripping psychological thriller that kept me hooked from the first page to the last. Claire Douglas masterfully weaves together past and present timelines,Highly recommended if you’re looking for a well-paced, twisty read that will stay with you long after you’ve finished.
Donna Giblin –
It kept me reading, hard to put down
Kate –
What a tangled web we weave. This story jumps from character to character seamlessly. You can see the characters in your mind, understand why Saffy loves her gran even after learning more about her. The house feels a bit like a horror story, I am not sure I could stay in it but Saffy as other ideas and her reasons are understandable. Her mother Lolly’s lack of memories puzzles but then can any of us remember at 3yrs of age what we did or who we met. Tom is definitely a side character not really playing a big part but a character that is needed. The epilogue wraps everything up nicely without rushing it into a neat ending.

Rating: 3.8/5It is not particularly unusual for the marketing blurb to describe a book that they think people will want to read rather than the one the author actually wrote, but this is one of those more rare occasions where the story is a significantly better, more rounded (and certainly less melodramatic) affair than its blurb suggests. This is the second book I have read in recent weeks that has been influenced to a degree by the real life story of Mary Bell. When young couple, Saffy and Tom, set up home in the former home of Saffy’s grandmother, Rose, they have no idea what they are about to unearth and the shocking path of discovery that they will be led down.If you are looking for an action-packed page turner that moves along at a rollicking pace, then this probably isn’t the book for you. Whilst it is not exactly a slow-burner as such, the author has taken a considered approach and, for the most part, the layers of the mystery only unfurl very gradually. There are plenty of interesting twists and turns, but I suspect that the pace of the story may not be to everyone’s liking. Even though there was never a point where I wasn’t enjoying the read, there were times when I felt it could have benefitted from an increased tempo. The characterisation is impressive throughout. Each individual protagonist is well-drawn and fully formed, making them entirely credible and relatable. The storyline has also been intricately plotted and holds together nicely. It has to be said that one or two events lean towards being a touch too convenient, but are necessary mechanics to move the plot forward. However, in the overall scheme of things, these instances are forgivable. All in all, Claire Douglas has succeeded in producing an engaging and, at times, emotional mystery that held my interest and is easy to recommend.
