The Last List of Mabel Beaumont: THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER
THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLERThe list he left had just one item on it. Or, at least, it did at first…
Mabel Beaumont’s husband Arthur loved lists. He’d leave them for her everywhere. ‘Remember: eggs, butter, sugar’. ‘I love you: today, tomorrow, always’.
But now Arthur is gone. He died: softly, gently, not making a fuss. But he’s still left her a list. This one has just one item on it though: ‘Find D’.
Mabel feels sure she knows what it means. She must track down her best friend Dot, who she hasn’t seen since the fateful day she left more than sixty years ago.
It seems impossible. She doesn’t even know if Dot’s still alive. Also, every person Mabel talks to seems to need help first, with missing husbands, daughters, parents. Mabel finds her list is just getting longer, and she’s still no closer to finding Dot.
What she doesn’t know is that her list isn’t just about finding her old friend. And that if she can admit the secrets of the past, maybe she could even find happiness again…
A completely heartbreaking, beautiful, uplifting story, guaranteed to make you smile but also make you cry. Perfect for fans of A Man Called Ove, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, and The Keeper of Stories.

Nancy Foote –
Beautiful story
This book is a winner. The characters are lovable, except for one creep. It skillfully addresses grief on many levels. I love seeing cross-age friendships. There is nothing I don’t like about this book.
Joanne Sherif –
Lovely tale of unlikely friends who surround a woman in need.
I loved the cast of characters, each unique and fallible but with great strengths. This is an easy and enjoyable read with a surprise little twist at the end.Charming.It would have been that much richer if the author developed the group to include more diversity. And quite an easy fix as this was a hodgepodge circle of women. Next time maybe.

Sweet, lovely book
Loved this book – beautiful character development, and insightful relationships between multigenerational women who are strangers and become dear friends. A lovely read with a cup of tea on a rainy afternoon
Robin L Riha –
a bit disappointed
I liked the story right off the bat but as it progressed I realized poor Arthur was the one who didn’t get the life he deserved. Mabel was immature and selfish. While she made up for some of it changing and all, it didn’t make me more receptive to her. I feel the author made all the men in this book either jerks or not worthy of a great love and great life. Arthur was just a poor fool who loved the wrong woman, and all the other men were meaningless. I like all the women were great friends. That made the story worth reading and how Mabel took in and mothered Erin. But, instead of trying to help Erin mend her family, she vilified the family. Why not have her help reconcile and make it a teaching moment like she helped with everyone else? So a bit disappointed where the story led but was compelled to finish it because of the friendships the women all formed.

The Last List of Mabel Beaumont
Very good story about love, friendship and how years can change things but love will always prevail. Dot and Mabel are best, best friends but life gets in the way of their true feelings until they reunite when they are 86 and they truly reveal how they wanted their lives to turn out!

Such a heartwarming story!
Thank you for this beautiful story. It’s a story about women, young and old, and 2nd chances and the courage to live the way we want to. I am so glad I read it!When I started the book, I almost put it down. It had such a slow start, I didn’t think I’d enjoy it. I don’t know why I decided to read further, but it turned into such a good story. Mabel, the main character who tells the story, started out seeming like a cold fish who was just a shell of a person. As the book progressed, she became more and more alive.Mabel makes several women friends after her husband’s death. Each one has some sort of pain or grief. Each one is lonely. In their efforts to help Mabel find the woman who was her best friend and whom she hasn’t seen in 62 years, they become a solid group of friends who support each other. They all grow right along with Mabel. They each learn to live their own way rather than what they feel is expected. Most beautifully, they learn to accept themselves as the people they are. And, isn’t it wonderful that someone decided to write a story not about a young woman just starting in life, but about an old woman who finally gets the chance to live her life? An old woman who, after years of playing it safe, finally has the courage to live! Even with the mistakes she makes with her new friends, she ends up helping each of them, albeit not in the ways she tries.I think this is my new favorite book for this year. With as many books as I read, that’s saying a lot.Take the time to go past the slow beginning. You’ll be glad you did.

A perfect emotional roller coaster
It’s been a while since a novel evoked such a wide range of emotions from start to finish. Mabel is 86 years old; her husband of 62 years, Arthur, is 89. They’ve had a rock steady marriage with ups, downs and everything in between. Arthur, a lifelong, list maker dies (that’s not a spoiler) and what ensues his Mabel’s desire to cross off the one thing on his last list. However, she ends up adding her own items to the list and that’s when things get interesting. The book covers a short span of a few months but it’s packed with action, and occasional reminiscing, all from Mabel’s POV.There’s somewhat of a “mystery” within the book too and truthfully I figured it out halfway through but it didn’t ruin the last half of the book. The writing is detailed without being tedious and is so well done, I was there with Mabel every step of the way. It’s for all ages, all genders and really makes you ponder your life, and makes you realize, every day is a new beginning.

A life not lived fully finds new wings
A wonderful story of an elderly widow trying new things, making new friends, & helping each other to find happiness, or purpose. While the female friendships & bonds made are inspiring, the ending lovely, I can’t help but feel such sadness for Arthur. His loyalty to Bill, his dead best friend, & to Mabel, the younger sister of Bill, whom Arthur married, meant Arthur was cheated out of a life he could have had- a passionate, reciprocal marriage, children, & grandchildren.

Such a moving book – thought provoking, joyful, tearful, funny, all at the same time. When I’m next asked the question, ‘Read any good books lately?’ Yes and The Last List of Mabel Beaumont will be my answer.
Nicola in South Yorkshire –
Sometimes a book just immediately appeals. The title and premise of The Last List of Mabel Beaumont were right up my street, and now I’ve read it I can say that the story is too. This is a brilliant and beautiful book in every way. Not only was it all I hoped for but it exceeded all those hopes.A big part of what makes this my kind of read is that it’s about an ordinary and long life, and about what happens when Mabel has to step out of her comfort zone. Married for 62 years to Arthur, when he dies she has so many thoughts and feelings. She’s lost and lonely without him and yet the marriage wasn’t always one where they were completely in step with each other. Arthur left a list and it says ‘Find D’. This must surely mean that Mabel must find Dot, her former best friend who she hasn’t set eyes on for six decades. What comes next is the most perfectly executed story about marriage, companionship, friendship and love. Mabel makes new friends of all age groups and although an unlikely group they make, the wisdom and experience of each is of so much benefit to the others. With their help, Mabel sets out to try and find out what happened to Dot and in turn begins to heal from her loss.I thought Laura Pearson’s writing was perfection. She nailed all the minutiae of life and made it interesting. The story tugs on the heartstrings and yet it’s so uplifting and joyful in so many ways and I loved that she managed to surprise me with some unexpected developments in the plot. This is a book that has so much detail I want to talk about that I could go on and on for ages (I will spare you that!) but sometimes a book comes along that just entirely envelops me, which has a bit of everything I love, characters that I care about, and a story that I become totally immersed in and which makes me laugh and cry. The Last List of Mabel Beaumont is that book. It’s a complete and utter triumph.

Ich war mir nicht sicher was mich erwarten würde, aber es hat mich mehr als positiv überrascht.Eine tolle Geschichte, herzlich, warm, witzig.Ein Buch das als Hardcover bei mir ins Regal ziehen darf.
Olive –
This is a great story of female friendships throughout the years and between generations. I love how Laura Pearson was able to bring together all these fictional women with real life issues to build a strong and meaningful group filled with love and support. My list now includes – Finding my “squad of ladies” to stand with me in my old age. I highly recommend this book for those of us of a certain age. (Insert a wink & a smile)
Gillian Holt –
Wonderful story of a long life, some regrets but never too late to put things right. Age is just a number
