The New Neighbors: An International Bestseller – A Gripping Dark Suspense Novel

“Claire Douglas is a class act—she never, ever disappoints.” — Lisa Jewell, New York Times bestselling author of Breaking the Dark and None of This Is True

Unassuming neighbors may not be what they seem in this twisty, spine-tingling thriller from the internationally bestselling author of The Couple at Number 9 and The Girls Who Disappeared.

They seem like the perfect couple. But what are they hiding?

When Lena overhears a conversation between her next-door-neighbors she thinks she must have misheard.

The Morgans are a kind, retired couple who recently moved to their sleepy suburban street in Bristol where nothing ever happens. But to Lena it sounded very much like they were planning a crime.

Her family and friends tell her she must be mistaken. Yet Lena can’t stop thinking about that strange conversation. What if they really are about to do something terrible?

What if she can prevent it?

Especially when doing something might help ease her conscience about her own dark past . . .

  1. Heidi – Pawprints on the Page

Secrets don’t stay buried forever—and neither does guilt.
Some stories creep up on you quietly. Others plant a seed of dread so deep that every page feels like walking across a frozen lake, waiting for the crack. The Halifax Hellions does both—and brilliantly. From the very first moment Lena overhears her seemingly harmless neighbors discussing something they were never meant to say aloud, the entire tone shifts. What should be a safe, sleepy suburban street becomes charged with suspicion, secrets, and the unsettling realization that evil doesn’t always look the way you expect it to.What makes this story so effective is Lena herself. She isn’t a perfect narrator. She carries guilt. She carries regret. And perhaps most dangerously, she carries the desperate need for redemption. Her fixation on the Morgans doesn’t just come from concern—it comes from a place of personal reckoning. That emotional complexity adds layers to every decision she makes, forcing you to question whether she’s uncovering truth… or unraveling herself. The tension builds slowly but deliberately. Alexandra Vasti excels at making ordinary moments feel threatening—casual conversations feel loaded, quiet glances feel accusatory, and the normal rhythms of suburban life become a mask hiding something far darker. There’s a constant push and pull between paranoia and possibility, and it keeps you guessing until the very end. What truly elevates this story is the moral ambiguity. There are no clean lines between right and wrong, only choices made in fear, guilt, and survival. Lena’s journey isn’t just about uncovering what her neighbors are hiding—it’s about confronting the parts of herself she wishes she could forget. This is the kind of thriller that lingers. It makes you question how well you really know the people around you. And more chillingly, it makes you question how well you know yourself.Dark, tense, and emotionally layered, this is a gripping reminder that sometimes the most dangerous secrets live right next door.I had the opportunity to read this book ahead of publication, and these are my honest thoughts.

Really hard to put down !!!
Wow what a wild ride! I hope I never have neighbors like these. This was a book that is very hard to put down. It kept my interest right from the start! The ending left room for a sequel. Keep writing Claire Douglas!

    Thriller book
Not an interesting cover really, but fits the name of the book. I picked this one up because it seemed like a good thriller. The story was far fetched at times, but I found myself not minding and was able to just go with it. What I didn’t enjoy was how some parts just seemed over written, or over described. Little things that bring nothing to the table by adding all these little drawn out details. The ending was definitely twisty and wasn’t bad. I would recommend this book for thriller fans.

    Thriller By An Amazing Author!
If you like books where everyone is a suspect and you don’t know who to trust, this is the book for you. When Lena overhears her new neighbors discussing something that sounds suspicious to her, she just knows she needs to investigate. As she investigates, she learns more about her neighbors, and things are not adding up. I found myself shouting at Lena to stop investigating and putting herself in possibly dangerous situations (which she does multiple times). However, Lena’s meddling made for quite a few exciting moments. The only other character I truly trusted was Lena’s son. To me, everyone else could be a suspect in whatever is going on. Everything comes together in the end in an unexpected way, and I loved it.This book has a tenacious (and reckless) main character, twists, and stress-inducing scenes that made me afraid to read what happens next.

    4.5 stars!
4.5 stars! This book had me hooked from the very beginning!Lena, while helping her son with a media project, unintentionally overhears her seemingly respectable neighbors, the Morgans, discussing a potential crime. Despite her family and friends insisting that she misheard, Lena becomes obsessed with the idea that something terrible might have happened. Driven by a desire to prevent a crime and alleviate her own troubled past, she feels compelled to take action. It features multiple perspectives from Lena, Natalie, Henry, and Peter, allowing readers to dive deep into each character’s life. Right from the start, you’re pulled in and won’t be able to put it down until the very last page. It all begins innocuously, but this is a story you’ll want to pay close attention to; subtle hints sprinkled throughout the narrative come together beautifully by the end. An unexpected character makes an appearance, leading to a conclusion that is both surprising and well-executed.I love stories that grip me and don’t let go until the final moment. The twist at the end leaves you speechless, pondering the entire plot long after you’ve finished reading! Just think about it—what could go wrong when you’re recording sounds of the night and accidentally overhear a conversation that spirals into an obsession with your neighbors? How bad can it get? I’ll let you discover that for yourself! This book is perfect for anyone who enjoys a fast-paced read, likes to play detective, or is intrigued by unsettling situations with creepy neighbors. If you’re in the mood to solve a mystery within a mystery, this one will keep you turning the pages! I’m excited to say this is my second book by this author, and I’m completely hooked—I can’t wait to read more!Thank you, Harper Perenial and NetGalley, for the DRC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
