Breakthrough

ONE OF THE GREATEST BREAKTHROUGHS IN HUMAN HISTORY.
A SECRET THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE FOUND.
AND A CRISIS THAT CANNOT BE STOPPED.

Deep in the Caribbean Sea, a nuclear submarine is forced to suddenly abort its mission under mysterious circumstances. Strange facts begin to emerge that lead naval investigator, John Clay, to a small group of marine biologists who are quietly on the verge of making history.

With the help of a powerful computer system, Alison Shaw and her team are preparing to translate the first two-way conversation with the planet’s second smartest species. But the team discovers much more from their dolphins than they ever expected when a secret object is revealed on the ocean floor. One that was never supposed to be found.

Alison was sure she would never trust the military again. However, when an unknown group immediately becomes interested in her work, Alison realizes John Clay may be the only person she can trust. Together they must piece together a dangerous puzzle, and the most frightening piece, is the trembling in Antarctica.

To make matters worse, someone from the inside is trying to stop them. Now time is running out…and our understanding of the world is about to change forever.

    Interesting Concept
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I sat down to read this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were dynamic, you either liked them or hated them, and the plot was well thought out. There were several different ideas/actions that were going on and I liked how they all tied together towards the middle of the book. You have a marine biologist that has just learned how to communicate directly with dolphins using a certain type of software, a researcher in Antarctica that has discovered a huge chunk of the glacial wall about to break off and create a tsunami bigger than anything the world has ever seen, and the discovery of an active ring in the bottom of the ocean noticed by the Navy. A ring that wasn’t made by anyone on earth… While that sounds like a lot, Grumley ties everything together beautifully.I loved Allison and the dolphins Sally & Dirk, they were so sweet! The idea of communicating with them was amazing and I had to agree with Allison that the government would have been all over that technology. Clay & Ceasere were great character s as well. Overall, the characters and the plot were very strong. There were some grammatical and spelling issues throughout the book, but not so many that I wanted to stop reading. Although, Grumley did misspell a character’s name right after introducing her in the previous sentence. Those made me do a triple take at the sentences. There were a few things that happened at the end of the book that should have been explained to really bring a sense of completeness to the book. While I was happy with the ending, I think Grumley should have added details on how certain things happened. Also, I know I’m nitpicking but I don’t think anyone but the president could have effectively ordered nuclear bombs to be fired from subs. Grumley showed how the President and the VP had to authorize the release of the 2nd launch, so I think the earlier firing by another government official was simply done for the sake of the plotline without caring about accuracy. I think it would have been more realistic to have the president be swayed by certain members of his staff to order the 1st launch, and then learn that those members held back vital information. While Grumley certainly did an excellent job with that character ( I wanted to beat him over the head with my iPad as I was reading the story) small accurate details make for a stronger and more cohesive story in my mind. However, I’m not in the government so maybe that character really could have ordered the launch of nukes.Overall though, I really enjoyed the book. I also enjoyed the small subplot that you can catch if you pay attention. I would love to see that pop up again and get fleshed out in another one of his stories in the future. All in all, an interesting read. I’ll be watching for more of Mr. Grumley’s novels in the future.

An ok read, but have to suspend disbelief a little more than I’d like
I enjoyed it enough to start on the 2nd book, but I found several things in the book jarring. Someone compared this to Cussler… Cussler at least has things that make sense, even if they’re outrageous. One thing that kept coming back to nag me is a C130 landing on an unimproved snow/ice field without skis. Maybe they do that, but every picture I’ve seen of C130’s at McMurdo has skis. And, if nothing else, skis sound cooler, so why make it have wheels?Tactics were a bit weird and some aspects not explained very well. And bad guys are maybe worse than they were developed to be, without much logic for some of the leaps for their actions.A few lines were thrown in just because the author could, but I found a bit jarring as they didn’t really fit with the moment. Yea, they were a cute/funny, but that only works if it fits with the story. What made it weirder for me is that some of the bits were better connected and made more sense (within the parameters of the story). I could follow the aquarium thing, and maybe there were aspects I could quibble with, but it furthered the story.SPOILER (not a big one): On the other hand, I had a difficult time following the logic that certain building blocks/amino acids/dna/etc have to result in certain outcomes – particularly since we have plenty of contradicting examples in real life. (Birds don’t look like people, etc.) That part would’ve done better without trying to explain it away. I can accept similarities in a fantasy, but providing an unnecessary and illogical background was far more confusing than if it had been random coincidence. Especially since it’s completely unimportant to the plot. (Maybe it matters in future books.)Slightly bigger spoiler: Someone mentioned tactics in one of the last fight scenes being silly. But what threw me is that there was no strategic reason for that battle in the first place. “Bad guys” already had what they wanted, and a random fight with the “good guys” wouldn’t even have made any difference.Oh, and the author doesn’t seem to like to kill anyone.

You will be hooked! I got the second book in this series, Leap, on ‘bookbub’ and it was free or maybe $0.99 at the most. So I thought given the great reviews tht it wouldn’t be much of a risk to buy this first one and read it in the correct order. Oh boy am I pleased I did!!!Great sci-if AND great characters and lots of emotions. I found myself really invested in the story. All three of them actually. I’ve just finished book three and can’t WAIT for book four to come out. It’s 98% completed!! YEAH!!Great author. Writes a very fast paced, action packed, very intriguing story with great detail when it’s required. I’m really loving the characters!! I just want more books!!! I love the way the author is questioning our humanity and our science.Easy fast read that you won’t want to put down!

I loved this book. It had everything. Drama, suspense, and a little bit of romance. It was well written and the characters were well defined. As usual there was an intro into the next book ‘Leap’ which sucks you in as its so good. Will need to read it next. Loved the dolphins. Wish we could communicate with them. Definitely worth a read.

Good ideas. Could flesh the characters out a bit more.Otherwise, not a compelling read, but not bad all the same.

I was looking for an action adventure like the books of Clive Cussler, Andy McDermott and Paul McGowan and bought this book partly as a gamble, and partly because I liked the story line about communication with dolphins woven into an action adventure. This book is a real pleasure to read: I read it during our holiday and couldn’t put it down! It’s very wel written, entertaining, a story line with some original and unexpected twists and the characters are interesting. The combination of an adventure, Science Fiction, political intrigue and environmental issues works very well in this book!An excellent book. Self-published by the author, more original and better written than many books written by some well established and known names!
