    Unknown Tragedy in Halifax
This was a great book exploring the tragedy of war, in this case WWI, and an explosion that happened in Halifax during the war. It is basically about two women involved in this event and some of the details are very sad and challenging to read. The main character is a nurse and who doesn’t love a good story about a nurse and all her trials? I have just read a few novels about WWI after visiting Ipres in Belgium. So many Canadians gave their lives for that cause…so reading a story about the women left behind was a good follow-up. Real life circumstances that really happened to women in both world wars were explored and then a shocking and devastating explosion on top of that! I enjoyed the read!!

    Simply phenomenal!
When Donna Alward switched to writing Historical Fiction, she sure didn’t mess around. I reviewed ARC’s of her romances for years. I bought this book awhile back and was waiting impatiently to get to it. It was so worth the wait! When the World Fell Silent is an excellent story based on an event that happened in Halifax during World War I. Two ships collided in the harbor and one was carrying explosives. The story follows two different women from different walks of life who both suffer losses and are forever changed by the same kind of losses due to the explosion of that ship.Alward obviously did extensive research, but her biggest triumph is creating characters that immediately draw you in and make you feel every pain, every loss and every triumph right along with them. This book is simply phenomenal! GO READ IT!

    Good Book
This was good. I did not know about the disaster in Halifax Harbor, so I learned something from it. This is not one of those stories that all comes right in the end because so many people lost their lives in the disaster, but it is a good story about family and friendship and making do when that’s all you can do. I’d recommend it to fans of historical fiction.

    Love the history about Halifax
The novelist did a fine job of helping the reader see and feel the historical events of Dec 1916. Loved the characters and their reliance on each other. The focus on the role of families however constructed felt very real.

    Depressing
This book was much more fiction than historical. I had no issue with the quality of the writing; the plot moved along and the storyline was engaging throughout. However, I learned little about the disaster of the ships’ collision and none about real people survival stories, just of fictional characters. The dual stories of Nora and Charlotte, although individual, were similar in that they were both depressing. Nora, especially, was a frustrating character who took forever to let go of Alley and embrace the goodness of Neil. I wanted to bop her over her head and scream, “Wake up and recognize your blessings!”I have visited Halifax, so I could visualize the locations of a few places mentioned in the book. I have also visited the Maritime Museum where this disaster and other disasters, including the Titanic, are described. Unfortunately, this book did not increase my knowledge beyond what I learned in the museum. 3 stars

    LOVED THIS BOOK
I absolutely loved this book and couldn’t put it down. I read it in 3 sittings which is unusual for me. I put down everything that had to be done in order to read it. I was deeply moved by the characters who were so realistic that I felt as though I knew them. I vacationed in Nova Scotia many years ago and was generally familiar with the explosion in the harbor but this book described it in such a way that I experienced it first hand.I highly recommend this book and believe it was a brilliant first historical novel by this author. I look forward to more work from her and thank her for this beautiful book.

I enjoy historical fiction and really liked this Canadian war story of women and their struggles and how their lives intertwined. It sometimes felt a little wordy or overly descriptive in a funny way, but it was a nice read and I’d recommend it!
