Your Perfect Year: A Novel

A man consumed by a meaningless life is going to do something he’s never considered doing before. He’s going to enjoy the day…

For hyper-particular publishing heir Jonathan Grief, the day starts like any other—with a strict morning fitness regimen that’ll keep his divorced, easily irritated, cynical, forty-two-year-old self in absolutely flawless physical condition. But all it takes to put a crimp in his routine is one small annoyance. Someone has left a leather-bound day planner with the handwritten title Your Perfect Year in his spot on his mountain bike at his fitness course!

Determined to discover its owner, Jonathan opens the calendar to find that someone known only as “H.” has filled it in with suggestions, tasks, and affirmative actions for each day. The more he devotes himself to locating the elusive H., the deeper Jonathan is drawn into someone else’s rich and generous narrative—and into an attitude adjustment he desperately needs.

He may have ended up with a perfect year by accident, but it seems fate has set Jonathan on a path toward healing, feeling, and maybe even loving again…if only he can meet the stranger who’s changing his life one day at a time.

A unique story that makes for a great read!
I am so glad I chose this as my Kindle First Reads selection! I was intrigued by the premise and I am very happy to report this is a great read. Our story begins with Jonathan who finds a yearly planner mysteriously left on his bicycle on January 1. Jonathan is a very regimented person and finds himself intrigued by this planner which is filled out for everyday of the New Year. The book alternates chapter by chapter between him and a very different character named Hannah. She is very much a different personality from Jonathan. Hannah always finds the bright side and is a very optimistic person. Hannah is about to find her optimism put to the test. On the flip side Jonathan will find his own life turned upside down by the mysterious planner. Both characters were so enjoyable that I never wanted to get back to the other one when the perspective would shift which is rare in a novel like this with different POVs. This story is also very unique and it’s fun for the reader to see where it is going. I had no idea the writer was German until it was clear where the book was set. I usually avoid translated novels for fear of it bring disjointed but that is definitely not the case here. In fact a lot of the book reminded me more of a British novel which could be the touch of the translator. A very enjoyable read!

    SURPRISINGLY INTERESTING AND ENJOYABLE!
“[She believed] that a person’s fortune was colored by their attitude: optimists experienced good things, pessimists bad, and the universe would give those who expected the worst what they deserved.” —Charlotte Lucas, Your Perfect Year“‘He who hesitates is lost.’ … He liked to deal with things methodically and quickly; productivity of this kind gave him a warm sense of virtue.” —Charlotte Lucas, Your Perfect YearWhat do a book publisher, a daycare worker, a psychic and a hobo have in common? Read this book and find out!I was pleasantly surprised to discover this little gem of a book in the Kindle Free October selections. It is a clever and well-written book that was formerly a best seller in Germany before it was recently translated into English. This book is based on the philosophy that our energy is guided by the focus of our attention. It is very engaging, written in dairy entries from two different perspectives during a one year time period. It’s interesting, heartfelt, and even a bit mysterious as a missing diary and numerous coincidences and mishaps unknowingly weave two separate lives together, forever changing the course of both lives—one naïve and optimistic, the other opinionated and set in his ways. This is a book about discovering who you are, the true meaning of life, and what’s really important. It’s a book about regrets, forgiveness, and healing. About learning how to love, and letting love in. It’s full of fun clichés and internet quotes of age old wisdom and advice. So say ‘Yes’ to life and enjoy! This book might just change your life as well!“You can’t give your life more days, but you can give your days more life.” —Anonymous Proverb

My Thoughts: 3.5 StarsThis book is a darling read that gives off the vibes of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, A Man Called Ove, and a couple other books of that nature. Jonathan Grief is the heir and owner of a publishing company that only focuses on highbrow literature despite quickly changing literary world where popular fiction is in. However, “popular fiction” is considered beneath Jonathan’s publishing company. His father, never the warm and fuzzy type of parent, keeps high standards for his son to reach despite his aging body and dementia. Jonathan does not take a huge role in the company and appears to be more of a figurehead at first. He spends his morning bicycling and jogging. When we first meet him, it is New Year’s Day and he goes for his jog. When he reaches the waterfront where he works out after his jog, he finds a mysterious bag hanging on the handle of his bike he leaves locked there. Opening the bag, he finds a journal but it is missing the name of the owner. However, written on the inside cover, are the words “Your Perfect Year.” This starts him on the path to trying to find who the journal belongs to and to meeting new friends along the way. With his publishing company not doing well, and without the right ways to cope with difficult decisions as the owner of a company, Jonathan decides to follow the journal’s activities for the days. This story switches between the perspective of Jonathan and the mysterious “H” in this found journal and their stories gradually intertwine. There is heartbreak, love, finding one’s self, loss, and acceptance in this novel. It was charming and an enjoyable read. I am thankful that it was offered as a Kindle First option through Amazon for free, otherwise I may have never given this book a try and realized just how well written it is.

A bit slow and predictable in the way of romance novels but definitely a good read and worthwhile. The life snippets and ideas are great.

Refreshing characters and interesting concept that is delivered beautifully. Sweet, but not sappy or contrived. While there is a lot of sadness, it’s balanced with great hope. Just what is needed in 2020.
