Amazing read for young and old alike!
I cannot say enough good things about this book! I only read it because I read all of the books I buy to give to the older kids in our family (to make sure they are truly age appropriate), and I am so happy I did.El Deafo is a graphic novel about a little girl who loses her hearing at the age of four after a bout with meningitis. On the surface, much of the story is devoted to her self-consciousness about her deafness and the large hearing aids she has to use to compensate. At its core, however, it is a timeless tale about the worthy and sometimes difficult endeavor of finding a true friend. As in real life, the main character has successes and setbacks, and she learns a variety of important lessons along the way. It is charming, uplifting, funny, and very touching.I would recommend this book for anyone age seven or eight (depending on reading ability) to 100+. The graphic novel format provides context clues and further insight for newer readers; for example, there are daydreaming sequences throughout the story which could normally be confusing, but in El Deafo the separation from the main story is crystal clear. In addition to the increased clarity, I thought the graphic novel format added a lot to the story in terms of emotional depth and humor.I finished El Deafo yesterday, and took just enough time to order a couple more copies before starting it over again!

Feature all three in your library and encourage youth to write their own stories.EL DEAFO by Cece Bell is a powerful graphic memoir focusing on the frustration of growing up with a hearing impairment. While Cece’s story highlights the embarrassment and loneliness of deafness experienced by many children, the universal themes of friendship and acceptance are at the core of this unforgettable story.The author’s warm and honest approach to storytelling contribute to it’s appeal. Cece’s “listener for all” alter-ego El Deafo is wonderfully drawn in sequences placed in green bubbles to separate them from reality.Besides the exceptional storyline, what makes EL DEAFO so magnificent is the graphic memoir format. I read this book for my classes and I didn’t think I would enjoy it so much. I just finished, and for sure, I loved my reading. It is funny and very easy to read, the illustrations truly helped me to understand better and feel involved in the storytelling of Cece’s journey.

I am a fan of Raina Telgemeir’s graphic novels based on her childhood. When she blurbed El Deafo, I knew I would enjoy it.Cece loses her hearing at the age of four as a result of sudden illness. All at once, she has to relearn how to communicate with those around her, including family and friends. School turns out to be a bit tricky, since she can’t read her teacher’s lips at all times. Not to worry. Phonic Ear to the rescue!Cece’s Phonic Ear hearing aid gives her superpowers, but it also makes her feel alienated and different, not the easiest things to juggle while trying to make friends…and growing up. Sheesh.I loved the illustrations, details and storyline. I was especially moved by her afterword about deaf culture and hearing impairment. Definitely worth reading whether you’re a kid or an adult.”I felt different, and in my mind being different wasn’t a good thing. I secretly, and openly, believed that my deafness, in making me so different, was a disability. And I was ashamed.””As I grew up, however, I made some positive discoveries about deafness and about myself. I’m no longer ashamed of being deaf, nor do I think of myself as someone with a disability…To the kid me, being deaf was a defining characteristic, one I tried to hide. Now it defines a smaller part of me, and I don’t try to hide it-much. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves graphic novels.Cece became deaf at the age of 4 after an illness she had. The book sees her struggles at fitting in at her new school, which sees her surrounded by hearing people. She goes through many different friends who seem nice but make a big deal about her hearing aid. They assume that turning the volume up on the television and the radio will help Cece understand and one girl, Ginny, speaks really loud and slow.I like the way Cece portrays the characters as rabbits and I especially love the illustration of Cece the rabbit wearing headphones during a hearing test.I got this book for my 13th birthday but I would say this book is aimed at a younger audience than ‘Smile’ and ‘Roller Girl’. I lent it to my friend who has now lent it to her 8 year old sister. I would recommended it for ages 7 and upwards.My favourite part is where she makes friends with Martha although a lot of the American terms she said where difficult for me to understand, the same with the school years but it is no different than in ‘Smile’.

El Deafo is a fabulous graphic novel for grades 3+. It is the semi-autobiographical story of Cece who goes deaf after a serious illness. This book is a beautiful exploration of the social, emotional, and physical challenges she faces as she seeks to find her place in the world and establish her own identity. Beautiful, moving, and frequently funny! Highly recommend!
