The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity
INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • An economist explains five laws that confirm our worst fears: stupid people can and do rule the world
“A masterly book” —Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of The Black Swan • “A classic” —Simon Kuper, Financial Times
Throughout history, a powerful force has hindered the growth of human welfare and happiness. It is more powerful than the Mafia or the military. It has global catastrophic effects and can be found anywhere from the world’s most powerful boardrooms to your local bar.
It is human stupidity.
Carlo M. Cipolla, noted professor of economic history at the UC Berkeley, created this vitally important book in order to detect and neutralize its threat. Both hilarious and dead serious, it will leave you better equipped to confront political realities, unreasonable colleagues, or your next dinner with your in-laws.
The Laws:
1. Everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals among us.
2. The probability that a certain person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person while deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses themselves.
4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals.
5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

Simple, yet powerful.
Elegant, short, yet powerful.Note that this is not a sarcastic of cynical book. Author defines a framework as well as axioms to describe found categories of humans. The last 2 pages is an epic ending explaining why societies rise and fall according to the power shifts amongst the four categories of humans. Intriguing and a fun read.

It’s not enough information
It’s short read and basically a mathematical equation

Eternal Verity
Amazing how concisely a profound concept can be stated and defended by calling on the reader’s intuitive understanding of the plight of humanity and history rather than blathering on for 400 pages of arcane examples. Brilliant insight. One has to wonder if the era of political correctness the liberal fear of offense suppressed the wider publication. Stupidity is quite possibly an eternal verity that needs to be called out by the most straight forward vocabulary. Kudos to the author.

Could be a short 3 page book
The five basic laws can be condensed into one page because rule descriptions are obvious and repetitive. It would be much better if historical examples were provided in each rule.

Short, funny, and pithy
This is a very short, very amusing, and very clear and useful book. It had me laughing all the way through. At the same time, it gave me very useful structure for understanding life, society, why so many stupid things happen in the world. You can read the whole thing in an hour, but it will definitely stay with you longer than that.

very interesting
I didn’t realise there were degrees of stupid nor did I ever assess the gains/ losses to a persons action. This is a well distilled book of principles which everyone should read just to better understand the type of people that surround them.
