The Vineyard
To her family, Natalie Seebring is a woman who prizes appearances. So when she announces plans to marry a vineyard employee mere months after the death of her husband of fifty-eight years, her son and daughter are stunned. Faced with their disapproval, Natalie decides to write a memoir. Olivia Jones lives vicariously through the old photographs she restores. She and her daughter Tess have no one, so they cling to the fantasy that a big, happy family is out there somewhere. When Natalie hires Oliva to help with her memoir, a summer at Natalie’s beautiful vineyard by the sea seems the perfect opportunity to live out that fantasy. But all is not as it seems at the vineyard in Rhode Island – Natalie is not quite the mothering type. Simon Burke, who runs the vineyard’s day to day operation, sees in Oliva and Tess and unwelcome reminder of the wife and daughter he tragically lost.

A MULTIFACETED STORY THAT PROVES WHY THIS AUTHOR IS SO WELL- LIKED
I have not read many of Barbara Delinsky’s books in quite some time. This one was originally published in 2000, so there is no mention of cell phones and technology, which might make this dated to some. The plot is intriguing; and the character development is what makes this a delightful read. The story is told from the vantage of many viewpoints: Natalie, Olivia, Suzanne, Greg, Carl, Simon, Tess – all add so much depth to this story. In many ways the vineyard is a character also, offering challenges, warmth, identity, and acceptance to these characters. I read it in one day and stayed up past midnight to do so. It was like meeting a family, and then being part of their stories as they grapple with their challenges. There is some sexual content, and I know from other reviews that having such disturbs and offends some people; however, there is no more than one would read in a mystery novel, general fiction, or other genre these days. It is not handled salaciously in any Barbara Delinsky novel that I have read. It has always seemed to be appropriate in her novels, as they reflect real life circumstances. It is not ever gratuitous and smutty. If a reader wants a good story with characters that one can feel are real people, then this is an excellent choice for reading.

A very enjoyable read
I liked this book as it was well written. There were few, if any, grammatical/spelling errors, misuse of words (i.e., bring and take) a broad vocabulary that was pleasant. The story was interesting, well planned, and kept your interest. Loved the history included as well as the cats.

Should Be Made Into a Movie
This is one of the best family novels I’ve ever read. I’ve read her books for years but somehow had not read this one until recently. It is such a complete story and all the detail about the main characters life throughout the years, is awesome! Beautiful story and all the characters personalities are so well written with deep meanings behind them. This should be made into a movie or perhaps a TV movie that is shown over a few weeks so it could do justice to the time frames. The only thing I wish is that we had gotten to hear how the wedding went, the ending was fairly rushed but this book is wonderful!

very well written
A lovely story about life, family, business, work and new beginnings. Life has changes. It all depends on how you handle them. A great read!

Heartwrenching, informative and an absolute unexpected delight.
Parts of the story made me think of my parents’ hardships during the war and the difficulties they lived through. The story as a whole was brilliant.

great beginnings then a dive
I love the idea and crafting of this book. Towards the end it felt like a different author and that everything got sewn up just to finish.

A realistic view of family, the end was a bit rushed though, Barbara Delinsky is one of my favourite authors and she didnt disappoint with the vineyard/
