    Great!
This is my 3rd Lance Spector Book written by Saul Herzog. The part of Mr Herzog’s writing I’ve enjoyed the most is the accuracy when writing about places and historical events. In fact I will become intrigued by the description of places or events and end up spending a day or more of my reading time studying and learning about places or events that existed. However the characters in the novel are fictional and have superhero personas. The author does an excellent job intertwining history, places and fiction. The action is wild, there is never a dull moment and so far I’m just unable to put them down. So on to book 4! If you enjoy the style of novels I’m describing, I encourage you to read the Lance Spector Thriller Series.

    The Target was Good
Another great story in the Lance Spector thriller series. The characters are so detailed and brought to life, their strengths and weaknesses are easy to see. The characters are heroes, yet flawed; they make mistakes. It makes it heart-wrenching and real. Also, this story is realistic, like a journalist is reporting on the events, instead of an author writing them. Fast-past, plenty of action and heart, and addicting.

    Great neo-Cold War thriller
Finished the 1st 3 books in Saul Herzog’ Lance Spector series. Long books but are page turners that grip you the whole way. The length of the novels give time to put in many different story lines. Compelling recurring characters, that you care for, although you lose some along the way. Truly hate the bad guys. Good story telling and narrative. I kept waiting for Lance Spector to say the lines, “I’ll be back!,” and “Come with me if you want to live.” But I think Spector makes a great Terminator as an unstoppable force! The books do such a great job of showing evil getting its due! If you love The Gray Man and Orphan X, you will also want to read the Lance Spector novels. have already ordered the 4th and 5th in the LS series.

    Incredibly…exciting
I’ve now read three novels in this series and have just started the fourth. Herzog’s narratives are well paced and dynamic; he’s a master of the genre. I have especially appreciated his sometimes sympathetic (and illuminating) background commentary on Russian history – it mitigates against the almost comic-book sense of Russians as a gang who can’t shoot straight (vs American Lance Spector who never misses). On the other hand, Herzog’s determination to identify ALL the specifics of guns & ammo can be bewildering to a reader whose closest connection to firearms is his fireplace and his armchair. And lots of details about Russian landscapes and cityscapes tempt this unfamiliar reader to skip back into the action. But I realize these details contribute to the credibility of the action; at the very least, one appreciates the thoroughness of his research. The one habit of his that really strains my own credulity is the rapidity with which his (“good”) characters recover from serious wounds. Perhaps their goodness speeds up the healing! Nevertheless, these novels are fun to read, and I am happy to dive right in again after finishing each one.

    a real gripper
The plot was good, held my interest and kept me on the edge of my seat. I’ve read 3 of this authors books now, can’t wait to read another. The protagonist was a little mysterious, but that leaves things to discover in future episodes. Most similar books have some realistic parts to them and the one thing this book brought out. Was the tenuous relationship between Russia and the US among other countries, and nuclear weapons. You don’t hear much about that recently, but the presence is there as it is in this book.

Not as good as prior books
This book has all the same solid core characters and a good storyline. However, I had several issues with this one though:— parts were just way too gruesome for me. It’s a story about war but I just didn’t need the sadistic section and found myself skimming instead of reading. Only the strength of prior books kept me going after this at all.— as in prior books, I just don’t appreciate the role of his female characters. They are strong women but just way too weak at the same time. Some have major character flaws that either don’t seem necessary or realistic.— the description on buildings and war plans and weaponry rivaled a Clancy novel. I found it interesting but too much for my taste and skimmed here as well.—. In general, I found myself skimming to turn pages to finish more than enjoying what I was reading and turning pages because I couldn’t wait to see what happened next like I have in prior installments of Lance Spector.I will try one more book to see which way the writing style goes. If it is like this one, I will be done. I just personally didn’t need the sadistic nature this took. I cannot unread it so I’m stuck with those visuals.

This is the best of the Spector novels so far. It does not depend as much on the main man. It expands the descriptions of the others around him and lets some light shine on their inner thoughts. The plot – hardly beyond belief. Elements seem odd, but plausible. A very enjoyable read and I can recommend it. But on,y after reading the first two, otherwise lots of it doesn’t make sense.

A really, really good series. Solid, complicated plots to keep you on the edge of your seat to find out what will happen next. Characters you really get to know complete with all their strengths and weaknesses. Action a plenty (quite brutal at times) but in the context of the story.Appropriate bits of history are inserted that leave you with more that just a good read. And finally, excellent projection of world politics as they are coupled with a good take on the US system with all its hope, faults and limitations as opposed to the Russian ingrained view of the future being found in the past.

Appreciate the depth of the research in writing this .. actually , what is happening in Ukraine now , is what has been narrated here !Also , would like to read some emotional connection between Lance and the two ladies in the subsequent books … it may add some human angle to the brutal reading !!

The basic premise of the series stays true in this book and is eerily reminiscent of the world today. However, the author includes several long passages of truly vomit-inducing sessions that are truly just there to shock and disgust the reader. They are in no way relevant or necessary to the plot; they take away from it instead, and cause me to lose some respect for the author.

An excellent read you could see where the fiction of the book could be aligned with some of today’s real life events
