“Schwab has impressively woven a compelling character drama and feminist critique into a horror thriller…sumptuous descriptions of place and time, and the slow-burn melodrama between each of the women… a tale told sharply but sweetly enough it goes down as easy as that happy-hour cocktail that, surprisingly, knocks you flat.” ―The New York Times
“Schwab sends you whirling through a dizzying kaleidoscopic adventure through centuries filled with love, loss, art and war―all the while dazzling your senses with hundreds of tiny magical moments along the way.” ―Naomi Novik

In a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever—and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. The first in Schwab’s addictive Shades of Magic series. Kell, an official ambassador of Red London, is forced to join forces with Delilah Bard, a cut-purse from Gray London. Perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. Schwab’s beloved Shades of Magic trilogy tells the story of a dazzling world of parallel Londons where magic thrives, starves, or lies forgotten, and where power can destroy just as quickly as it can create. A new adventure set in the world of the Shades of Magic series where old friends and foes alike are faced with a dangerous new threat. A gritty story of ambition and jealousy where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and allegiances are called into question. In the thrilling follow-up to Vicious, a super-powered collision of extraordinary minds and vengeful intentions leads to a terrible reckoning.

4.5 / 5.0
This is lovely and heartbreaking and gives the same vibes as Addie La’Rue. I adore it and will be rereading it.The ending, which I can see how people feel is weak, is so infinite. Schwab gives us all the pathways as they were written and then lets us know the characters still walk on but the path into their future is in our imaginations. It does the same thing as Addie.Overall, I enjoyed this. The writing is beautiful, the characters are so complex and interesting, and the setting could be a travel guide. My only complaint was sometimes the lamenting went on and on and on, but overall this is a great story and a good read.Until Next Time, MC

Emotion. Tension. Toxic Vampires.
BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL takes the tradition of vampire lore and infuses it with emotion, tension, and an overall gothic atmosphere that will leave you spellbound. Schwab has a lyrical way of developing a story through not only her characters, but the world they live in. She gradually peels away the layers until all is revealed.Let’s just say it. This is a toxic lesbian vampire novel. It is what I hear everyone saying about this one, but the idea of queer vampires is not a new one. Anne Rice was the queen of including all sexualities in her books. So why is this book worth reading? Simply. The story is more than its tagline. It taps into the complexities of relationships and power dynamics within romantic entanglements. It explores over the centuries of Charlotte and Maria’s lives how women are treated not only by men, but by other women. There is duplicity, insatiable hunger, and levels of madness. These three women show the best and the worst that having immortality can be. And the way the author crafts her tale makes it so much better.BURY OUR BONES IN THE MIDNIGHT SOIL will not be for everyone. However, the storytelling and the characters are what kept me reading. Schwab always pulls me into her worlds, and I am always thinking about her books long after I have finished. I cannot wait for more.Audiobook Note: Having three separate narrators for this book was the right choice. Julia Whelan, Katie Leung, and Marisa Calin each embodied their characters and gave the listener a distinct shift in voice. However, I will be honest, I really enjoyed reading the prose in hardcover, though I did spend time listening to this book as well.Pace: ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕Elocution: ☕ ☕ ☕ + 1/2Characters: ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕ ☕

Beautiful Writing… But a Bit Draining
I really wanted to love this book.At the beginning, I did. Maria’s voice felt vivid and alive — sweet, wild, and distinctly Latina. There was something feral about her that made the opening of the story feel sharp and compelling. But as the novel went on, that wildness slowly gave way to something else. Greed. Rage. By the time Lottie and Alice enter the narrative, I found myself wondering whether the vampires in this story are monsters because they kill people… or whether they were already monstrous and vampirism simply magnified what was there all along.Confession time: if I don’t like the characters, it’s very hard for me to love the book. The story has flashes of beautiful writing, but it also has stretches that feel… draining. Which, to be fair, is thematically appropriate for a vampire novel. What really wore me down, though, was the repetition. Certain words appear in threes (literally, literally, literally), and the “bury my bones…” refrain shows up often enough that by the end I found myself thinking: yes, yes — the bones are buried, the soil is watered, the feral rose has teeth. We’ve established this.I love lyrical writing and moody prose, but repetition only works when it deepens the story. Here it often felt like the narrative circling the same patch of midnight soil again and again.By the end, I didn’t hate the book — I was just tired of it. There’s an interesting idea here and moments of strong storytelling. I just kept wishing someone along the way had suggested trimming some of the repetition so the story itself could breathe.

Cocoblu has the worst packaging, the front cover had fold marks on it, and the spine has poor handling marks on it as well. The size, quality, and formatting are perfect. Will update about the content after reading it.

I lucked out and happened to order this on a one day sale, and was so happy it arrived signed by the author. Her writing style sings to me, and this is a moody little lesbian vampire story that romps across centuries. Dark romance and wonderfully written
