Dark State (Jason Trapp Thrillers Book 1)
If you come after the CIA’s most feared assassin, there’s one cardinal rule: Don’t miss.
America is under attack. Thousands lie dead after simultaneous strikes across the country. The day will come to be known as Bloody Monday.
Jason Trapp, codename ‘Hangman’, was a covert operative whose feats became the stuff of legend. He was the tip of the spear—the man his country unleashed when all hope was lost.
Six months ago, someone sold him out. The Agency listed him as killed in action. He lost everything—and everyone—he held dear.
But Trapp’s not that easy to kill. As his country reels from the deadliest terrorist attacks it has ever witnessed, Trapp’s personal vendetta leads him right back to where he started: duty to his country. The violence, the terror, the assassination of his partner… It’s all connected.
And now the Hangman is coming for the guilty.

Non-Stop Action
It held my attention.Dark State is action packed. I was hooked and read the first 120 pages in one sitting. Slater uses good variation among multiple characters to keep it interesting. He does get repetitive in underscoring his lead character’s skills and single-mindedness as well in referring back to his scarring experience of losing a comrade that has focused him on relentlessly pursing justice and carry the story forward. There was one link I thought the author didn’t explain in the book – relating to how Trapp showed up at a crucial ambush. Otherwise the sequence of events was plausible. It is topical as well, and the first book where AI is a huge factor in the caper (though interestingly it did not refer to the data system as AI). Slater has certainly established characters (primarily Dani and Jason) who are ready made for sequels and probably a work-and-more relationship. All told, good escapism and a fine first-outing for the author. I’ll probably check out the second book in the series.

Reacher — Trapp Two of a kind?
I’ve read the first 3 in the Jason Trapp series. i agree with others, they’re mostly a pretty fast-paced, easy read. I’ve read each one in about a day– of course, that’s without sleep, or just a short cat nap, and doing almost nothing else.Jason reminds me of Jack Reacher in multiple ways: Both are loners yet loyal to those they care about & respect. They are patriots. They have a deep sense of responsibility to & for others and their country. They’re both large men, which can be positive or negative, depending on the circumstances or situations they find themselves in. Neither really likes authority figures but due to their military backgrounds, will follow orders–usually. They both have a moral compass and we’re invited along as they struggle to figure where a given action might lie within their personal code. Of course, not all are a struggle. Some are mandatory either for their own survival or because it’s simply a matter of “justice”. Both are self-confident, except, perhaps, where women are concerned but they respect them and have no patience or use for men who use & abuse. They’re also both highly skilled in their tradecraft, sometimes appearing as cold and hard as those bad guys they’re pursuing.I really like the addition of Ikeda. She’s revealed another side to Trapps’ personality–a softer, nurturing side, at the same time, showing that women can be smart, tough, strong, do just about anything men can and aren’t afraid to show it or to put jerks in their place. They say opposites attract yet we’re continually shown where/how Trapp & Ikeda are alike. It will be interesting to see where these men writers take their primary character’s love interests. Yes. I said love, not lust. There really is a difference as Trapp’s discovering but is it enough to change who you innately are?Unfortunately, the other thing these books have highlighted for me, is just how self-serving, manipulative, outright crooked and greedy our politicians, “public service” authorities and leaders can be– not just ours but all around the globe. These books can be read strictly for their entertainment value, or you can dive a little deeper into personalities and history, drawing corollaries to real life.

Fascinated by content.
First book ever read by Jack Slater. Well written. Each character played an intricate roll as the story unfolded. Looking forward to reading more books written by this author.

Very bloody
Fast paced. Not cluttered up with relationships. Interesting story. My biggest gripe was how incredibly bloody it was. The train. The church. The assassination on the highway. Bodies flipping everywhere. I guess it had to be bloody so the story would move along. I’ll read book 2 but if there is as much slaughter in it, it might be my last. The book reminded me of the Executioner series of the 1980s where someone died all the time.

Enjoyable fast read
The book is an easy read because it moves along at a fast pace. You are engaged from the first page. The plot is good. If you enjoy CIA-spy-fast pace- thriller type books, this one is definitely for you! If you like it goo much, beware… there are 12 books in the series. You will be busy for a while.

A good start for the Jason Trapp Series
This is the first Jason Trapp novel, and as usual, I read it out of sequence. The former CIA officer emerges from his self-imposed exile after a failed operation where his best friend got killed. News images of inhuman mass murders and real-time attacks on public figures move Jason reluctantly into action.I enjoy a good thriller, and Jack Slater has been known to produce a few. He was probably one of the first commercial fiction authors to endow their protagonists with human traits and weaknesses rather than creating more superheroes. In doing so, he has come up with more believable stories. “Dark State” provides the template for subsequent episodes. As usual, Slater includes a strong female character in the person of FBI Special Agent Nadine “Dani” Carter, the strikingly beautiful daughter of a Marine Gunny and a Lebanese civilian. There is the promise of sexual tension, but that’s about it. The author could have done better in this case. Dating her father’s Lebanese posting limits the present-time reader’s imagination. Making a big deal about her ‘shimmering emerald eyes’ objectifies her character.Slater also over-describes weapons, which he does not in subsequent novels. This limits the audience in terms of Clancy-lovers and not.Despite its weaknesses, I truly enjoyed “Dark State” and gave it five stars on Amazon and Goodreads.

Edge of the seat gripping action which keeps you glued to the narrative. Looking forward to his next thrilling novel.
Jacques de Guise –
Slater mixes the current political crisis and uses political science scenarios that are chilling to the bone as his narration is extremely plausible. Lived in DC, and know Utah so all of that is close to home.
Thomas James –
Incredibly satisfying book. At first the plot wasn’t making sense to me but after a ton of chapters it did. This book was like a perfect puzzle that when is done, becomes a beautiful art. Jack Slater is one hell of an author!

I thoroughly enjoyed Deep State. I had not read this author and was looking for something exciting to read. Deep State certainly fit the bill. Can’t wait to start the next book. Thanks!
