Industrial Revolution: An Enthralling Look at How Machines and Factories Changed Our World (Historical Periods)
An Enthralling Look at How Machines and Factories Changed Our World
The Industrial Revolution marked one of the most dramatic shifts in human history. What began as a wave of invention turned into a complete transformation of how people lived, worked, and thought. This book unpacks that turning point with clarity and depth—making sense of both the breakthroughs and the costs.
You’ll explore:How millions were drawn from farms into factories, laying the foundation for explosive industrial growth. Why the steam engine became a force of global change, reshaping not just industries but daily life. The textile innovations that lowered prices, sped up production, and built the first modern factories. The gritty reality inside factory walls, including the experiences of women and children working long hours in tough conditions.Little-known stories of rivalry, patents, and the race for profit, as inventors and entrepreneurs scrambled for control. The rise of railways and telegraphs, and how they connected people, goods, and ideas across continents. The overlooked connection between industrial expansion, colonial power, and enslaved labor.Fresh ideas in science and technology that continued to spark changes far beyond the factory floor.A shift in how time, money, and work were understood—and how it reshaped identity, ambition, and culture.
Whether you’re curious about history, progress, or the roots of the modern world, this book offers a clear, honest lens into the era that set it all in motion. It brings the Industrial Revolution to life—without glossing over the challenges it brought with it.

A transformative period
Enthralling History provides this three-hour read of the Industrial Revolution which transformed society through rapid technological, economic, and social change. Beginning in Britain, it introduced inventions like the spinning jenny, steam engine, and telegraph—revolutionizing production, communication, and transportation. Rural life gave way to city-based factory labor, fostering economic growth and colonial expansion, yet worsening conditions for the working class. Exploitative practices, including child labor, triggered later reforms. Innovations in science, energy, and materials fueled industrialization worldwide, notably in Europe and the U.S. Its legacy—mass production, global connectivity, and enduring challenges in labor and environmental ethics—continues to shape the modern world and our technological lives today.

The rise of machines and industries
Many sections cover the various inventions of power-driven machines – the steam engine, power looms and weavers, locomotives, and others that transform industries from manual production to mass production with these inventions. The rise of powerful industrial companies that needed labor gave rise to child labor, brutal factories, and little oversight. This led to reform movements.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Interesting and easy read.
An interesting and well-paced summary of how technology changed society is provided in this book. From James Watt’s steam engine to Jethro Tull’s seed drill, the book neatly analyzes significant inventions and links them to more general social and economic shifts. Its straightforward writing style makes difficult history understandable without avoiding the most disturbing sides, such as child labor and social displacement. A good, educational book for anyone interested in the history of contemporary industry. I found this book easier to follow than a textbook I had in a college course, on the subject. One thing I liked, was the use of timelines in the first two chapters. I think it is an element that should have been used throughout the book.

This Is An Excellent Book About The Industrial Revolution
This excellent book tells about the some of the advantages of the industrial revolution and some of the wonders it brought to this world. This book also tells about some of the drawbacks of the industrial revolution and some of the negative effects it had on some people.
Michael J. Bohn –
Fair but unclear on major invention rationale and design.
A Basic overview, this book does not clearly how the inventors came to the designs for the invented devices.

Great Book
Wellman’s insight of the Industrial Revolution provides intriguing information on one of the most remarkable times in history with how it transformed the world from farm life to the era that we see today. I learned quite a bit from his book and it makes a great one to have on hand for reference on the Industrial Revolution.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
