Key Lime Garden Inn (Captiva Island Book 1)

Sometimes the life you never planned is exactly the one you need.

After her husband’s sudden death reveals a web of betrayals she never saw coming, Maggie Wheeler flees her picture-perfect Massachusetts life for the healing shores of Captiva Island, Florida. What begins as a week-long escape to visit her best friend becomes something more when Maggie wanders through an open garden gate and meets Rose Johnson Lane, an elderly woman whose island estate holds decades of secrets.

When Rose passes away, she leaves Maggie an unexpected legacy—and an invitation to restore the historic Key Lime Garden Inn. Armed with Rose’s journals, a borrowed book of wisdom from a famous writer who once walked these same beaches, and her own newfound courage, Maggie must decide: return to the life she knew, or embrace an entirely different future on an island that feels like home?

As Maggie navigates her children’s struggles with their father’s hidden life, her own awakening to new possibilities, and the gentle attention of a certain Italian gardener, she discovers that sometimes we must lose everything we thought we wanted to find who we’re meant to be.

The Key Lime Garden Inn is a luminous novel about second chances, the bonds between women across generations, and the courage it takes to bloom again—no matter what season of life you’re in.

    Like coming home
This is a sweet story of a strong woman finding herself after a devastating year. It didn’t keep me up nights: it simply let me relax for awhile and enjoy the unfolding of a beautiful story. There were so many characters to follow in this story and the layout made it simple to follow. I have already downloaded Book 2.

A Family Drama Epic Stuffed Into 290 pages.
Overall, this was a good read. It’s well-written and rich in detail. There’s a large cast of characters, but the focus was on Maggie, the FMC.The FMC was a 50-year old mother (who got married at 18!) and a grandmother. She had to find her way after her philandering husband not only left her, but died in the arms of his lover almost immediately afterwards. Oddly, this part of the story missed out on the needed flashbacks that would have better explained her ex-husband’s cheating and secret life. Later in the book it came out that the FMC even knew about her husband’s illicit affairs and ‘turned the other cheek’ for the sake of holding the family together. But when she found out, did she confront her husband then? How did he react? Did he tell her why he felt compelled to cheat? The author didn’t let us know.Another problem I found were the offshoot stories involving her adult children’s individual lives that had little to do with the main story arc. This muddied up the telling of the primary story. There was a stylized view of life on Captiva that read like a tourist brochure. But towards the end, the author did mention the horrible traffic on the Sanibel-Captiva islands, which is a very real problem. Also, she failed to mention that Captiva was dominated by the giant South Seas Island Resort on the northern end, and the rest of the island consisted almost entirely of winter estates for the very rich with small signs out front of gated driveways saying things like ‘Passing Wind – Private’.The FMC trespassed and accidentally met an elderly female sage who lived in a defunct seaside inn known as Key Lime Garden Inn. Even though the sage only met the FMC twice, she decided to ultimately leave the inn to her. Then the sage passed leaving no relatives. Uh…Yeah…OK???The book closes out with a flurry of actions by the FMC as she (and others) prepared the Inn for its grand opening. There is also a sneak peek of the follow-on novel in the series that didn’t entice me to get that book.

    Fun read!!
I love this book. Can’t wait to read the second one. It made me a little teary and also gave me a chuckle. I enjoy the whole friends and family dynamic. We vacation on Sanibel and Captiva every year so I have been to the places mentioned in the book. Some are now gone or have changed since Hurricane Ian tho, but the Bubble Room still has great cake.

Not sure, but liked it enough that I’m going to give Book 2 a try.
I wanted to love this book so much. I love Captiva & I’m in mid-life with adult children, so it seemed right up my ally. I appreciated the premise of the story, but Maggie’s dialogue & actions were stilted & didn’t ring true, or plausible at times. I liked the kids & really liked Sarah. Something about the writing style…. I can’t put my finger on it, but it just missed for me. I read the preview of Book 2 & noticed that Paolo’s dialogue was smoother, not as much of accent & I like that change. I’m starting on Book 2 & hope I get in a groove, so as to read more of the series.

    communication is the key
Ok I wanted more. Who was Daniel having an affair with? I’ve been waiting for the answer. Was it many.? Otherwise I loved the book. It’s exactly what I needed. My husband has terminal cancer and this gives me encouragement to keep going.
