Woof –
I’ve read all Adriana Trigiani’s books and especially loved the Valentine series. There were sections of this book that I really became engrossed in – Domenica’s story and that of the Glaswegian Italians. But there were parts that didn’t really hit the mark or were incomplete for me. I would like to have known more about Domenica’s son with Silvio and got very confused about which child belonged to who – perhaps a family tree at the beginning would have helped. I can see why she used Matelda’s story as an anchor to bring it all back to the present but she wasn’t as interesting as her remarkable mother. Anyway it kept me occupied for a few nights and I learnt something I didn’t know about how badly we treated our Italian immigrants during the Second World War. I look forward to reading the next one.

I must have read and enjoyed all of Adriana Trigiani’s books so I was looking forward to reading this one. I wasn’t disappointed, her characters are always people you care about and what happens to them you laugh and you cry with them.
