The Return

In the romantic tradition of Dear John, an injured Navy doctor meets two extremely important women whose secrets will change the course of his life in this #1 New York Times bestseller. Trevor Benson never intended to move back to New Bern, North Carolina. But when a mortar blast outside the hospital where he worked sent him home from Afghanistan with devastating injuries, the dilapidated cabin he’d inherited from his grandfather seemed as good a place to regroup as any. Tending to his grandfather’s beloved beehives, Trevor isn’t prepared to fall in love with a local . . . yet, from their very first encounter, Trevor feels a connection with deputy sheriff Natalie Masterson that he can’t ignore. But even as she seems to reciprocate his feelings, she remains frustratingly distant, making Trevor wonder what she’s hiding. Further complicating his stay in New Bern is the presence of a sullen teenage girl, Callie, who lives in the trailer park down the road. Trevor hopes Callie can shed light on the mysterious circumstances of his grandfather’s death, but she offers few clues—until a crisis triggers a race to uncover the true nature of Callie’s past, one more intertwined with the elderly man’s passing than Trevor could ever have imagined. In his quest to unravel Natalie and Callie’s secrets, Trevor will learn the true meaning of love and forgiveness . . . and that in life, to move forward, we must often return to the place where it all began.

    Totally Enjoyable
I love the way Nicholas Sparks brings all his characters alive. This book is so thought provoking and leads you to believe that any problems in your life can be overcome. The happy ending made my day and I’ll remember this book for a long time.On to another Nicholas Sparks book!

Sometimes we need to let someone go
Trevor came back to New Bern, NC to get his grandfather’s old house ready for sale after his grandfather passed away. He had inherited the house and the bee hives and was at loose ends while waiting to go back to school. His whole life had been put into upheaval after the mortar blast in Afghanistan that almost killed him and did end his career as an orthopedic surgeon. So now he was back in New Bern, a place of good memories, trying to move forward with his life before going back to school to be a psychiatrist, when he meets two females who will change his life forever. He meets Natalie and it’s love at first sight. But Natalie has a huge secret. And Callie, a young girl, who needs his help, has her secrets too and he finds that they intertwine with his grandfather and now him.I loved this book, like all of Nicholas Sparks’ books. They are warm, full of heart and yes, formulaic, but I like the formula so what can I say.

    Another beautiful story!
Nicholas Sparks never disappoints. As always he tells the most beautiful stories. You can almost picture yourself as one of the characters and you find yourself wondering how you might handle the situation if it were you! It is so refreshing to read a book that doesn’t find it necessary to use vulgarity to enhance a situation.

    A real feel good story
A real feel good story. The protagonist is a physician who had been a surgeon and then was injured in Afghanistan. He lost some fingers so he could no longer do operations and also had PTSD. He decided to become a psychiatrist. He had spent his summers in New Berne South Carolina while he was growing up. His grandfather lived there. The story is about his return to New Berne after his grandfather’s death. He gets to know a contrary teenage girl and also falls in love with a beautiful woman who is a deputy Sherriff. Their relationship is star crossed because she is married but her husband is in a persistent vegetative state. The emotional ins and outs of all the relationships are very life affirming.

    Good Story
I enjoyed reading this story, but there were too many details in the beginning–especially about to the bees. I ‘vs enjoyed his other books more.

The Return had a different tone compared to the rest of his novels. The characters took many chapters to develop and the love story between two of the main characters was a difficult, yet enthralling one. I admit, when I first got the book I read a few pages and put it down, which was a first for me. But once I gave it a second try, I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a few days. The story of Callie’s character was a complete surprise, and I was completely torn over several chapters. As with all of Nicolas Sparks work, there were moments of joy and laughter, and other parts of the novel brought tears and sadness. I can understand why many are saying they don’t like the story, it’s not like what he’s written before, and it’s true. His work in this book is completely different, but if you stick with it and give the characters a chance, you will grow to understand each of them and enjoy the journey as the story progresses. It was a great novel, and I’m happy that I purchased it. Can’t wait for the next one N.S.!
