The Stillwater Girls
Two sisters raised in fear are about to find out why in a chilling novel of psychological suspense from the author of The Thinnest Air.
Ignorant of civilization and cautioned against its evils, nineteen-year-old Wren and her two sisters, Sage and Evie, were raised in off-the-grid isolation in a primitive cabin in upstate New York. When the youngest grows gravely ill, their mother leaves with the child to get help from a nearby town. And they never return.
As months pass, hope vanishes. Supplies are low. Livestock are dying. A brutal winter is bearing down. Then comes the stranger. He claims to be looking for the girls’ mother, and he’s not leaving without them.
To escape, Wren and her sister must break the rule they’ve grown up with: never go beyond the forest.
Past the thicket of dread, they come upon a house on the other side of the pines. This is where Wren and Sage must confront something more chilling than the unknowable. They’ll discover what’s been hidden from them, what they’re running from, and the secrets that have left them in the dark their entire lives.

Gripping, emotional, and hard to put down
This book really pulled me in from the beginning and kept my attention the whole way through. What I liked:• Engaging storyline: A mix of mystery and emotion that keeps you wanting to know what happens next• Well-developed characters: You get invested in the characters and their relationships• Smooth writing style: Easy to read and flows well• Keeps you guessing: Just enough twists to stay interesting without being confusingThings to consider:• Some parts move a little slower, but it all builds into the story• If you don’t enjoy emotional or character-driven books, it may not be for youOverall:This was a great read and definitely worth it if you enjoy stories with depth and a bit of mystery. I would recommend it and would read more from this author.

Great read
Minka Kent did a great job with this book. I wasn’t sure how Wren’s and Nicollete’s stories would intertwine, but when they did it all started coming together beautifully. The direction of the whole plot was also a journey as I wasn’t quite sure where it would lead to, but as more clues and information was revealed, I could put things together which made for an engaging read. Nicollete was the first sensible character I’ve read in a long time; when there was danger, she called 911 and didn’t take it upon herself to be stupid and put herself in a dire situation. Brant’s secret was surprising and it made me rethink all his actions throughout the book. Well written with surprises and suspense and good pacing. I’ve read a few of Minka Kent’s books before and I plan to read more.

Fast Paced and Emotional
The Stillwater Girls hooked me from the very first chapter. The suspense was intense and the emotional moments hit hard and I never knew what to expect next. The atmosphere was dark and unsettling, and the tension stayed high the entire time. I found myself constantly questioning everything and everyone.Fast paced, emotional, and full of twists, this was one of those thrillers that’s hard to put down. Definitely recommend if you love dark psychological thrillers.

Really 3.5 Stars
First per POV from 2 perspectives: Wren & Nicolette. Present tense. The Wren chapters are far more interesting, unusual, and soaked with conflict. Characterization for Wren is incredible, heartbreaking, and page turning fuel from sentence one. The first ten Nicolette chaps drag because not sure how this connects with the Wren character. The slow Nicolette chapters seem intrusive by comparison at least until chapter 22, when she finally meets Wren and Sage (Wren’s sister), then it finally gets going until the climax in chapter 46. The whole story is an interesting covers-over-head thriller for 2/3 for Wren then devolves into a Hallmark movie of the week cheap ornament. The climax is rather disappointing as its resolution is done by talking rather than action, which is neither dramatic nor breathtaking. Neither main character really has much of a hand in the resolution, and there isn’t much of a climax at all as the true antagonist has pretty much only two scenes, one of which is in the climax. The denouement takes five chapters. I waited for a huge twist during these chapters and it didn’t come, stretching the conclusion out for four chapters more than it needed. The characterizations of are excellent (especially of Wren) but the pacing and plotting has issues. A cautious recommendation. Prepare for a disappointing plain vanilla ending that outstays its welcome. Tryit.

I was pulled into the story from the very beginning. Literally read the entire book in one long afternoon. I sometimes have low expectations of kindle unlimited books for some reason but this beautifully written story proved me wrong.

This is the first book I’ve read by Minka Kent, and what a fascinating story it is. The first half of the book felt like two completely separate stories and I wasn’t sure how they were ever going to come together, but when they do, the reasons why were staring me in the face all along, but the author’s trail of breadcrumbs led me down the wrong path completely. The story is told in alternate chapters through the voices of the two main protagonists, Wren and Nicolette, both standout characters, navigating life in completely separate worlds both of which felt authentic, layered and intense. I also loved the writing style and thought that the imagery was clear and easy to visualise. The story unfolds quite slowly easing its way forward, allowing you to get a sense of who the characters are – they’re so intensely real and the descriptions of their emotions are amazingly well handled. This story pulses with tension, but it’s the emotional depth that truly elevates it.I found this to be a mesmerising book that looks at survival, loss, love and reconciliation, with a strong family theme running through it. The ending did feel a little bit abrupt, however for me, this was riveting storytelling that didn’t disappoint, and I will be looking for more from this author.4.5 stars
