Three Apples Fell from the Sky: The International Bestseller
The Russian bestseller about love and second chances, brimming with warmth and humour
In the tiny village of Maran nestled high in the Armenian mountains, a place where dreams, curses and miracles are taken very seriously, a close-knit community bickers, gossips and laughs, untouched by the passage of time. A lifelong resident, Anatolia is happily set in her ways. Until, that is, she wakes up one day utterly convinced that she is dying. She lies down on her bed and prepares to meet her maker, but just when she thinks everything is ready, she is interrupted by a surprise visit from a neighbour with an unexpected proposal.
So begins a tale of unforeseen twists and unlikely romance that will turn Maran on its head and breathe a new lease of life into a forgotten village. Narine Abgaryan’s enchanting fable is a heart-warming tale of community, courage, and the irresistible joy of everyday friendship.

I loved this book!
Take all of the good things said about this book in the readers’ reviews and that is how I feel about it.But the main compliment was that it is life affirming. Even with all of the human loss through the years ,their spirits still shone through. Their hardships and personal losses did not diminish this brightness. The author’s writing is almost lyrical. But I feel the translator deserves much credit for showcasing the writing as well as she did. I have never been able to finish a book translated from Russian until now. I have often wondered why that was. I think I’ve found my answer!

Absolutely beautiful story
Beautiful, beautiful story of love and life in ‘The Old World’.In Three Apples we are treated to fate in love, life, and death; we experience community, compassion, and comradery; and folk lure along with its influence on isolated society. And that’s just to name a few of the delightful elements of the storyline. Within the pages of Three Apples are moments of heartwarming compassion juxtaposed with a comedy of errors in everyday life; the opening character of Anatolia moved me as she accepted and prepared for her fated demise, while the passage of Valinka and her yeast packets literally had me laughing out loud, drawing attention to myself at the local coffee shop while reading it.I am forever seeing reviews that bemoan English translations of Russian literature as being inferior and not worth reading. Phooey! To a large part of the world, the window of translated literature is the only way we have of experiencing Russian culture. Sure, in the case of certain works we may indeed miss out on the richness of the author’s message but that does not make the work unworthy of our time, and in Three Apples I get the sense that Lisa C. Hayden and her team of editors have given us – the reading West – a beautifully rich and rewarding work of art which will certainly stand the test of time.

Must read book for every Armenian
Amazing and honest book about Armenian village life. In this book humor and tragedy are tied together. You laugh and cry with all your heart, everything is written very frankly, real and beautiful. Thank you, Narine

A fable needed in these times
This charming book encircles the reader like a warm, compassionate hug. It shows you life’s torments and griefs in a pastoral way that delights. This is life tinged with magic and hope.

Just okay
This book confused me. I never understood where the story was going, what the point of the story was, or where I was in the timeline of the story. It finally started to come together in the end but it took a very long time to get there.

Charming and beautifully written
Three Apples Fell from the Sky perfectly captures the spirit and ambiance of Armenian people and the (hardly possible to imagine in our time) realities of peasant life. I am impressed at how with kind delicateness and wit the author depicted the (all) fascinating characters of the Maran mountain village. They moved me to the core. Author’s love and respect to her people and country is obvious on every page. The prose flows with natural beauty, almost like poetry (a sincere compliment to the translator, Lisa C. Hayden). The story is a human one, and what I’ve found remarkable, all the losses and hardships the Maran inhabitants endured didn’t break them, leaving the reader with hope and satisfaction. I’m enchanted by the story and highly recommend it to all people who love to be moved and amazed.

Gostei muito. A trama. Fiquei totalmente envolvida. Tipo de livro que eu gosto.
M Jose Figueiredo –
This is a wonderful book about the normal lives of the poor, who suffer and laugh, and learn how to live together with their traditions and their faith, in close communion with nature.Read it to have a respite from your troubled life – and to want to be a bit more like that: good-humourously accepting, strong and weak at the same time, trusting others.
Vince G –
What a wonderful author, can’t recommend highly enough, you are drawn into our heroine’s world and look forward to picking the book up, I won’t give any more away.

I am familiar with this author in russian and I must say the translation is brilliant!
Sigismund Arbuthnot –
There’s some good writing here. But the structure is weird and repetitive, and doesn’t make much sense of the title
