A Must Read!
This series has been an excellent read through book 5 Mosaic! Complex story but with real and believable characters keeping interest high. Looking forward to the final chapter in Echo. High praise to Michael Grumley.

Another great instalment in a gripping series.
Mosaic is the fifth book in Michael C Grumley’s fabulous Breakthrough series, a tale that keeps getting wilder, more intense and utterly immersive with each book. Grumley’s imagination, grounded in science, both knows no bounds but also respects them as his tale of a group of ex-Navy seals, scientists, ethical politicians (yes, they exist in Grumley’s world) as well as dolphins, primates and an assortment of others both “good” and “bad”, all working to understand or subvert and control a mysterious and powerful substance, gets taken to the next level.Having rescued the young Chinese woman, Li Na Wei, John Clay and Steve Cesare as well as Alison and Neely cannot rest on their laurels. While international interest in not only the bacterium they’ve discovered and its implications for Earth’s future but where it come from intensifies, it’s the attention they’ve attracted from their own that poses the greatest threat to their mission.Once again, the wide cast of characters are expanded upon revealing their strengths and vulnerabilities. Readers who have invested in this series need to be prepared to lose a few favorites as well for surprises. Just when you think you know where the narrative might be heading, it explodes in a different direction. Some old faces and new also make appearances and then, of course, there’s the endearing mammals – Dirk, Sally, the dolphin Elders, the gorgeous primates – all of whom have secrets to tell and wonders to share with their human companions. It’s evident Grumley’s cares about his story and the characters that populate it and, as a consequence, the reader does as well.I was describing this series to a friend and while I don’t think this does it justice, it’s sort of Avatar meets Indiana Jones, meets James Bond meets Dr Doolittle. I am just astonished that a major publisher or production company hasn’t picked them up. James Cameron? Where are you? Grumley’s series is waiting for you.My only disappointment is that I have to wait so long for the next book.

Very Good Book in a Great Series, but a Few Nitpicks
I’m a big fan of the books in this series and the arc of the series itself. Often, a book series using a repeated group of characters and issues devolves into redundancy or unbelievability to keep a story going past a realistic expiration date. I’m amazed that this author has kept going through five books, each with a major story arc, and no end in sight. I really enjoy the writing and the characters. I’m impressed with the clever way separate plotlines are woven together. It’s hard to believe aliens, dolphins, apes, scientists, computer programmers, government conspiracies, the U.S. Navy and two ex-SEALS can be worked into exciting, coherent stories, but Mr. Grumley has done it very well. All that said, I did have some small issues with Mosaic. SPOILERS: Some of the jumps in storylines were kind of sudden and awkward. Biggest problem for me was the entire CIA-DoD conflict. It was too long and too unrealistic. It seems the CIA was used here as a substitute enemy for the Chinese, Russian, and criminal opponents in past books. The idea that a massive, hidden, Cyber “war” could take place between the CIA and Defense Department without anyone else inside or outside of the U.S. Government finding out is absurd. A plot device that really irritates me, in both written works and TV/film, is the ridiculous ease in which someone will break into super-secure installations. Here, two computer hackers and two (known) operatives arrange to break into a secure facility posing as janitors! While the hackers take complete control of the facility. A facility guarded by the CIA, who is expecting a Navy SEAL incursion! I know that this plotline was created to allow the ex-SEALS to show their stuff, but it read like a bad episode of 24 with two Jack Bauers. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked this book and look forward to the next one. I just hope that the military action scenarios don’t get too over the top.

BUY The Breakthrough Series. it’s a steal
I have just finished reading MOSAIC (BREAKTHROUGH Book 5).This is NOT a spoiler alert.I’m just here to say this is one of the best, well written serial novels I have every read. I put it up there with Ryk Brown’s FRONTIER SAGA and Richard Phillips’s THE THIRD SHIP and THE RHO AGENDA. All great books I would highly recommend. You have heard people say they can’t put a book down; well this is one where you can’t wait for the next one. The characters are fanatic and engaging. You really get to know them, along with the dolphins and a gorilla. Same for the There is action, drama, humor, intrigue and a continuing plot. At the same time, just when you think you have some idea where the story line is going, it just keeps going. If Amazon ever offers the more complete set (when it is complete, there are more coming) get it. You won’t regret it.

This book is as good as the others that preceded it. The story goes on and with it an intriguing war around the US vs the US showing that sometimes branches of the same government could agree to disagree. Dirk, Sally, and Vize and their relationship with humans being got an exciting degree. Dean and her primate friends achieved a unique insight towards what happened to the also foreigners and friends’ planet. Eager to read the next book. Five stars for sure.

Cannot seem to get enough of this series and have already downloaded the next so I don’t miss a beat. Some of the characters from the very first book are now getting nicely ‘fleshed out’ and the storyline has expanded exponentially as I read. All good I can assure you.
Craig Mathieson –
Michael C Grumley is the new master of sci-fi, thrillers and adventure writing. Not since Dean Koontz has a writer so totally dominated cross genre writing and in this case it is so seamless that every element of the plot belongs to the entirety of the series. It is rare for a new talent to so completely eclipse those who came before, but that is exactly what the Breakthrough series represents.

Like the previous 4 novels of the series, Mosaic is hard to put down once started. It was well worth the wait. But it is still not finished!

As soon as you discover something really surprising, you get a feeling that this is just not it and something bigger is to follow. This is what keeps you engrossed in the book. A good follow up to the previous book.
