The Surrogate Mother is a superb Freida McFadden thriller
The Surrogate Mother is a superb Freida McFadden thriller. I was introduced to Freida McFadden’s books a year ago by my son’s wife, who loves McFadden’s books, and I’ve been hooked on them ever since. I did not read the books in the chronological publication order, and this did not affect my enjoyment. Each stands alone. I read all of the more than twenty books during this time and enjoyed each of them. Each was so gripping, so interesting, and suspenseful that I couldn’t put them down until I finished them. As a result, I read each in a single day. I also read other books during this period, such as Tarzan books by Burroughs and thrillers by Stephen King, which I also liked. All are great. But only McFadden books were impossible to put down; each day I read them, I couldn’t put them down.In the Preface of “The Surrogate Mother,” we read how our protagonist tells us that someone was murdered and everyone, including her husband, the police, her best friend, and her lawyer, is convinced she killed the person. Her lawyer advises her to plead guilty, assuring her that she will only receive a fifteen-year sentence. If she goes to trial, she will, without any doubt, be found guilty and be sentenced to life in prison without parole. She refuses, saying she is innocent. This Preface grabs our interest, and we are drawn to find out what happened. We are then told what occurred a year earlier and learn that she is unable to bear a child and decides against her husband’s advice to allow her assistant at work, who looks like her but is a decade younger than her, to have her husband’s sperm placed in her, become pregnant, and give the child to her and her husband. But many things go wrong. The book is filled with interesting people. We discover that some seemingly innocent people are evil, and seemingly evil and unkind people are good. There are red herrings, twists and turns, inexplicable events, and surprise endings. It is a delight.

Spoiler-Sensitive Review
The Surrogate Mother was an enjoyable and fast-paced read, though it didn’t feel particularly unique in terms of overall concept. The storyline had strong Lifetime movie vibes, making it fairly easy to predict the general direction early on. However, the execution kept the story entertaining and engaging throughout.I especially appreciated the emotional focus on Abby and her experience with infertility and the adoption process. Her desperation and vulnerability felt realistic and added depth to her character, making her decisions understandable even when they placed her in difficult situations. The antagonist was unsettling in a way that felt intentional, and the tension between characters steadily escalated as the story progressed. While some elements felt familiar, the pacing and character dynamics kept me invested. There were moments that raised questions about trust and accountability, which added an extra layer of intrigue without needing constant twists.Overall, this was a quick, compelling read that held my attention and would appeal to readers who enjoy domestic thrillers with emotional stakes and steady tension. While not groundbreaking, it was definitely entertaining and well worth the time.

Decent read, but predictable
After reading The Housemaid, I was eager to read this book. It had an easy to read story and nice flow to the storyline. However, I felt like the ending was somewhat predictable, and no real likable characters

Edge-of-Your-Seat Thriller
The Surrogate Mother is one of my most recent reads by Freida McFadden, and I couldn’t put it down. About three-fourths of the book kept me in intense suspense, and while the last portion was slightly less thrilling, it still delivered a satisfying and twisty conclusion.

Absolutely Wild!
I loved The Surrogate Mother by Freida McFadden! From start to finish, this was a wild storyline that kept me hooked. Just when you think you know where the story is going, McFadden throws in one of her signature twists and turns. The suspense builds perfectly, and the surprises never stop. If you’re a fan of unpredictable, fast-paced thrillers, this one is a must-read. Five stars all the way

Could not put it down!!!!
An absolutely gripping story just like the Housemaid series! Although this time I was able to narrow down my suspicion to two individuals and one of them proved out to be the culprit in the end! However, McFadden managed to throw a curveball that I was not prepared for! Could not put it down until I finished it! Soooo good!

Not quite a thriller for me…but still a good read
This was my first foray into Freida McFadden’s books. It was recommended to me by a friend who tells me she doesn’t really like thrillers. Hmmmm…This was a thriller, but not a very thrilling one. Kind of formulaic…I did enjoy the story and other than one thing, you could really see what was happening. The way Abby ‘missed out’ on some of the important milestones of the pregnancy. The way surrogate Monica made Abby feel like she wasn’t in on the conversations about the baby. All of the things that just happened and Abby kind of let go. The way Sam, Abby’s husband, was manipulated by Monica. But…the story held my interest and there were a couple of twists that I didn’t see coming. Not perfect, but a decent read.

Despite knowing what’s coming, this is still an action packed read with a few twists, turns and surprises. A great read.

Tolles, spannendes Freida-Buch. Wie immer ein echter page-turner, nail-biting Story! Kann man nichts falsch machen, außer zu sammeln und pro Woche ein Buch lesen.
