168 Better Than Takeout Chinese Recipes – A Cookbook
I’m Mandy Fu, a passionate home cook and a social media influencer (Souped Up Recipes) with 3 million followers worldwide, on a mission to share the joy of cooking and rich flavors of Chinese foodwith you. As I penned the recipes for this cookbook, I found myself confronted with a daunting task. China, with its vast territory, large population, diverse ethnic groups, and millennia-old history, boasts an astonishingly rich culinary heritage. The term “Chinese food” encompasses an infinite spectrum of flavors and traditions, making it a challenge to create a single volume that does justice to the breadth and depth of Chinese cuisine.
While I sifted through my recipes on my social media pages, I knew I had to cover all of those popular takeout dishes like Chicken Fried Rice, Mongolian Beef, Pepper Steak, Sesame Chicken, Sweet and Sour Pork, Chop Suey, Chicken Lo Mein, and more. These dishes have proven their status as beloved Chinese food by millions of audiences from all over the world. Their simplicity and affordability make them perfect for home cooking, offering a chance for everyone to cook better than takeout right in their own kitchens. Inspired by my childhood memories and the timeless cooking wisdom imparted by my parents and relatives, I’ve endeavored to include staple family meals passed down through generations, such as Beef and Broccoli, Cantonese Steamed Fish, Sweet and Sour Ribs, and Chicken Mushroom Congee. These recipes are emblematic of easy and homestyle cooking and have stood the test of time. With them, you’ll be able to savor the local meals like a native Chinese. Delving into the culinary treasures of China and reminiscing about my travels, I’ve curated various regional specialties that spotlight the diverse and vibrant flavors found across every province of this country. From the Beijing Doorknob Dumplings to Sichuan Mapo Tofu, you will see the spirit of Chinese cuisine deeply rooted in this broad land and shining with enthusiasm through time. From the tantalizing Shaanxi Beef Burger Rou Jia Mo to the hearty Yunan Herb Braised Beef Soup, you will appreciate the abundance and inclusiveness of the food culture in each ethnicity and region. From flavorful Hong Kong Beef Curry to Shanghai Crispy Breaded Pork Chop, you will experience the beauty of fusion foods, which were drawn upon their traditions and colonial history and then evolved into such delicious delicacies. Every dish is carefully selected to offer a taste of its unique locality and rich culture that makes Chinese cuisine so captivating. I also included some challenging recipes, such as Cantonese Roasted Duck, Char Siu Pork Buns, Taro Puff Dumplings, Aromatic Chicken Wonton Soup, Sticky Rice Dumplings Wrapped in Lotus Leaf, Yibin Flaming Noodles, and more. These dishes require patience and dedication to master. Besides clear instructions, I explained the reasons behind the methods, illustrated common pitfalls, and offered tips to help you achieve restaurant-quality results. My ultimate goal is for you to experience the same satisfaction and pride when replicating a dish you encounter in any Chinese restaurant and then impress your family and friends.
In essence, this cookbook, with 168 carefully selected recipes, is a humble attempt to capture a glimpse of the wondrous Chinese cuisine. Each recipe is accompanied by a demo video and detailed step-by-step photos, making this book your ultimate guide to cooking authentic and delicious Chinese food. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned chef, you’ll find valuable insights and secret tips to enhance your cooking experience, as well as heartwarming stories to bring more love and happiness to every meal.

Oustanding Cookbook
I have watched Mandy since she started her channel on YouTube. I’ve printed individual recipes and made notes on Chinese cooking techniques. When this cookbook was announced I assumed it would be a collection of her YouTube videos. I was amazed that the book is far more comprehensive and detailed than I could possibly have imagined. The pictures are abundant, clear, and enticing. The recipes are arranged to be on two facing pages so you do not have to turn pages. Only in a couple of cases for more complicated recipes like Sichuan Spicy Poached Beef is there a third page. Each recipe has prep and cooking time at the top and the number of people that the recipe will serve. The recipes have a QR code that will direct you to the associated video so you wach Mandy prepare the dish. I find that watching a chef prepare the dish always makes it easier to prepare and cook.I have followed numerous YouTube Asian chefs and purchased several cookbooks on Asian cuisine, but I always find myself returning to Mandy’s recipes because I have never been disappointed with the results. The instructions are crystal clear and the explanation of techniques allow me to apply concepts to dishes that I compose myself. Apart from the great recipes, this book will help change me from someone who follows recipes to someone who knows how to cook Chinese food.If you make the recipes in this book, you will never order takeout again.

This Book is So Amazing! It is so well written and organized. Every detail in order, great instructions and a picture of every recipe. There are so many recipes. This book is so good I bought 2 more for each of my daughters. The beginning of book details each and every Chinese utensil or appliance that they use and also details every spice and condiment that you will ever need. This is definitely the Only Chinese cookbook you will ever need! You don’t need to look no more this is definitely the Best!!!

Excellent Cookbook
Excellent cookbook. Great recipes with step by step color photos. Good for beginners. Book features QR codes to scan for video demonstrations which is extremely helpful. The author also does a great job presenting and explaining the different types of Asian ingredients.

Wonderful Book Hampered by its Design
This is a wonderful cookbook–marvelous recipes, instruction that can only be called elaborate, plus detailed “how-to” photos. My only quibble is with the layout and fonts. The plethora of information and many “visuals” have required tightly packed pages; often, the eye doesn’t know where to rest. Similarly, fonts can be too small. The book designer has done a heroic job, but be aware that the book can be challenging to use. Otherwise, a remarkable success.

Very impressive cookbook! Love it!
I started watching Mandys’ videos on YouTube some time back trying to learn how to make healthier versions of Asian or Chinese take-out food. Lets face it, “Chinese” food you buy at some take-out restaurants can be loaded with sodium and MSG. I’m in my late 60’s and my doctor has been on my back about eating healthier.Great Cantonese take-out involves using a carbon steel wok to achieve that ever elusive Asian food flavor “wok hei” that generally only restaurants can achieve. Trust me, as an Southern ‘Anglo- file’ who grew up on collard greens, black-eyed peas, and fried chicken, learning this cooking technique takes practice, but it has been a lot of fun! Keep reading and I’ll tell you how to reach that food nirvana.I already have three different sized carbon steel woks I’ve been using for years on my indoor gas range burners, but what I DIDN’T have was a high-powered gas wok burner to use outdoors that would get hot enough to recreate those delicious wok-hei flavors. AND not burn my house down. AND avoid setting off all my smoke detectors. So I ordered a dedicated burner online and a small SS cart from Amazon to mount it on and hold a 20# propane bottle. So the heating and cooking vessel problem were solved. Everything set me back about $200 dollars. A quick search and you’ll find what you need. The next thing I needed was a good cookbook to teach me how to use it. After buying several that I wasn’t too crazy about I finally found the one I needed. This is an outstanding cookbook if you’re a Asian food junkie like me, but need something easy to read and understand while experimenting with these new recipes.First impressions when I received it; This is a very robust book with a strong spine that should hold up very well in your kitchen. It’s NOT a cheaply made book. I have a bookrack in my kitchen half full of cookbooks with broken spines that didn’t hold up very well to constant use. This book should. Yes, I know I could use the internet! I prefer a book for quick reference when I’m cooking. After spending a couple of hours just perusing through the book, reading the intro, and Mandys’ personal story – which is eye-opening in itself, then thumbing through the pages, I notice how thoughtfully the book is laid out. Instructions on the left side of the pages and ingredients on the right. Photographs through-out help to illustrate her very well written and concise instructions.Something else I noticed; the ingredients are listed in metric weights AND imperial weights side-by-side at a quick glance without having to refer to a calculator. She also has a section that clearly explains ingredients used in Chinese cooking and possible substitutes. Nice touch! Here’s another nice feature, Mandy includes a QR code at the bottom of each page that links to her online videos for you to watch, if you need it!I’m proud to have this cook book! Nice job Mandy!

This has to be THE BOOK OF CHINESE COOKING.in my opinion nothing comes close.I’ve spent many years going to China and my wife comes from ShanghaiI know Chinese culture and cooking. This book is amazing, it changes the rules on cook books. She is teaching you how to create the recipes you enjoy from restaurants.Every recipe is laid out in amazing detail particularly the construction of the sauces. But the thing that makes this book so good is there is a QR code for each recipe which means you can watch Mandy in a video actually cooking the recipe. That is the game changer. She also has sections on Chinese/asian supermarkets and what to buy.Again backed up with a video tour.I really can’t recommend this book enough.I have followed her cooking on u tube and she has always impressed and inspired me.I am just a customer who bought this book via amazon. It’s expensive but I can assure you it’s worth every penny.

Jam packed with recipes that look so good! Haven’t tried any yet but they all seem to be explained in depth and have lots of photos which I appreciate because I am new to Chinese cuisine cooking. I picked this book over similar books because it looked more detailed and has a good sized extra section at the beginning on different equipment and tools and various ingredients e.g. what an ingredient is like and what kinds you’ll want to look for at the store. Also the author has an enjoyable writing style that is easy to follow and it’s a big book with so much to choose from.Update: I made the minced pork noodle soup and it turned out excellent and was fairly easy to make!
