Behind Every Good Man: A Novel
A wronged wife goes toe to toe with her cheating husband at the polls in this hilarious and heart-lifting novel by the bestselling author of Don’t Forget to Write.
It’s a doozy of a bad day for Beverly Diamond when she catches her husband, Larry, in a compromising position with his secretary. What’s a DC suburban wife to do with a soon-to-be ex, two young kids, and no degree or financial support in 1962? Beat the louse at his own game, that’s what.
Larry runs the Maryland senatorial campaign for the incumbent candidate projected to win against his younger underdog opponent, Michael Landau. But Beverly has the pluck, political savvy, and sheer drive to push Landau’s campaign in a successful new direction, even if he already has a campaign manager who is less than pleased she has inserted herself into the race.
Now it’s rival against rival. She and Michael do make a great team…maybe in more ways than one. But with the election heating up, she needs to focus on one thing at a time. If Bev can convince Michael to go modern, pay attention to women’s issues, and learn how to dress himself properly, maybe she can show Larry exactly how much he has underestimated her their entire marriage—and make her own dreams come true in the process.

An Entertaining, Captivating and Witty Novel
Kudos to Sara Goodman Confino, the Author for “Behind Every Good Man” for writing such an entertaining, captivating and witty novel. I was having a few bad days and “Behind Every Good Man” perked me up, and I was enjoying myself, and didn’t want the book to end. This is just the perfect book for the Election Stress, and actually any time. The genres for this book are Historical Fiction, Humor, Romantic Fiction, Women’s Fiction, and Contemporary Fiction. Is it true behind “EVERY GOOD MAN’ there is a woman who is manipulating the outcome? In this delightful, well-written Novel, Sara Goodman Confino vividly describes the political community and agendas, toxic families and her dramatic and colorful characters. The characters are complex and complicated. Some are quirky and both resourceful and deceitful. One of the female protagonists, Beverly Diamond, a doting wife, and loving mother, finds her politically motivated husband, Larry in a compromising position with his secretary. Larry runs the political campaign for the next expected senator. Beverly’s father has retired from a successful political career, and Beverly has had a front row seat to how different things work. Beverly’s quirky mother moves in to help Beverly with her two young children and has some secrets as well. What is Beverly going to do now? Just don’t under-estimate a determined woman.Beverly approaches the other candidate, Michael Landau, and convinces him with her expertise and guidance that he will win. Beverly also feels that women should be respected and listened too, and makes that part of the agenda. There are secrets, and betrayals that seem to go on in the campaign. Not only is Beverly fighting for Michael Landau to win, she is also determined to fight for women’s rights. This is also a battle between the spouses for what is right, and morally acceptable. I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of women, sisterhood, family, friends, emotional support, love, and hope. I highly recommend this thought-provoking novel! Happy Reading!

Such a good read
I was hooked on this book from the very beginning. I’ve read all of Sarah Goodman Confino’s book to date and love her style of writing – easy to read, likable main characters, and fun, yet empowering story lines. This book is no exception. Can’t wait for her next book.

Another Keeper
Set in 1962, this engaging novel follows Beverly Gelman Diamond as she navigates the aftermath of discovering her husband’s infidelity. After ejecting Larry from their home, Beverly faces the challenges of single motherhood and finding employment in an era when divorced women faced significant social stigma. The story takes an unexpected turn when Beverly, drawing on her political background as the daughter of a former congressman, becomes a campaign manager for the idealistic Michael Landau. This is personal. Larry is the campaign manager for the incumbent.Confino masterfully weaves together themes of female empowerment, personal growth, and political intrigue. The supporting characters are well-developed, particularly family members Marilyn Kleinman and Evelyn Gold, whose involvement in the campaign adds depth to the narrative. The author’s skillful use of both slapstick and subtle humor lightens what could have been a heavy story, making the characters more relatable. Even the antagonists are portrayed with complexity, and readers may be surprised by unexpected revelations about who the true villains are.Set against the backdrop of the emerging women’s movement, this novel effectively captures the spirit of change in the early 1960s. Through Beverly’s journey from housewife to political campaign manager, Confino illustrates the dawning of women’s emancipation in American society.A compelling read that combines political drama with personal transformation, “Behind Every Good Man” successfully delivers both entertainment and social commentary.

Read it
I was in a slump and i was looking for something deeper and different than the usual smut or who-dun-it reads. I loved this book. It was funny, it was feminist-ic, it was historical, it was relatable in a sense for a working mom. It was a quick read and flowed really well. The dialogue was believable. The characters were typically laid out, similar to most novels but not boringly so because they each had their own personalities too that was cemented with their dialogue and interactions. I gave it 4 stars and I would read it again.

Not only an enjoyable read and a history lesson, this novel set in 1962 reminds us how far women’s right have come and how much we take for granted now.Beverly was born the same year as my MIL, who is now living with us, and this story has made me see her in a new light, given she was a career women and school principal until her marriage in the mid 60s.Here in Australia women got the right to vote in Australia in 1902 and it’s amazing the USA was so far behind in that. As I said a great history lesson, and now I’m looking up all the women mentioned in the authors notes that the characters were based on. I hope there’s a sequel to this one too!
Really did not enjoy this book. So disjointed and difficult to retain my concentration. Maybe just me … but I just didn’t want to work that hard. –
Light, easy read, but enjoyable. I read it on a flight from the southern USA to Canada … made the time fly by.

Honestly, I could gush about this book forever, but here’s what really matters: I loved it. So much that I went out and bought a physical copy—the first book I’ve actually purchased in six months! The writing, the characters, the story—everything just clicked. Set in Washington, D.C. in 1962 during the buzz of political campaigns, the setting felt vivid and fascinating. The heroine was amazing—smart, capable, and totally in command of the political world around her. And the whole “revenge campaign” angle? So, so satisfying.Plus, the slow-burn chemistry between the leads was perfection. From start to finish, this was such a rewarding, entertaining, and completely satisfying read. Highly recommend!
