Salthouse Place: A Novel

Longlisted for The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize.

From debut author Jamie Sogn comes a twisty thriller about the allure of the past and the danger of the truth as a young woman dives headlong into a cult in a desperate search for answers.

In the far reaches of the Pacific Northwest, three best friends spend a day at the lake…but only two come home.

Ten years later, Delia Albio is tormented by the mystery of what happened to fifteen-year-old Zee on the lake that day. When she receives an email from Cara, the remaining friend in the trio, she can’t resist the pull of the “life-changing” news in the message. Delia, hopeful for answers, travels home to see her old friend.

But Cara is gone by the time she gets there, setting off another mystery. When Delia hears about the women’s empowerment group that Cara joined, she sets out for the group’s retreat property on the Oregon coast to find her. Delia feels this could be her chance to reconnect with Cara and reckon with that fateful day at the lake.

Instead, Delia uncovers a possessive group with a dark agenda. As their leadership closes in, Delia hurtles ever closer to the truth—if only she can survive a cult that will protect its secrets at any cost.

    Good book. Interesting Concept.
It’s a good book. Easily read with some well-defined characters and plot twists. I reserve my 5 star rating for the very best, and this was not for me. But it was interesting and held my attention.

Cults and kills in the Pacific Northwest, sign me up!
I ripped through this book in short time, as it delivers so much that I’m a sucker for: Cults, Murder, Mysteries, and some Sexy Time between characters. [winky face]But what makes this book more than just the sum of those very entertaining parts:– How the author weaves the atmosphere of the Pacific Northwest into her writing. As a Seattle native, I’m used to books/films getting so much about Seattle wrong, but in these pages I felt as if I was walking through my neighborhoods, stopping to get a bite at my favorite restaurant, or walking along our driftwood strewn beaches.– I loved the bits of exploration of the Filipino culture through the main character, Delia. I cannot say how many times I got hungry just reading the description of the meals her mother was making her in the kitchen! The writing has a depth and feels personal in a way many other thriller novels do not, and because of this I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the genre. A slam dunk of a debut novel — looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Potential was there but totally missed the mark!
The story had so much potential, but fell short after, the main character went looking for her missing childhood friend. She jumped into a cult so quick it was nauseated. Delia was naive, no common sense, and just plain exhausting. She was supposed to be investigating a disappearance and being secretive but let everybody she met know her moves/motives. She put her trust in EVERYBODY. The story started off so well, and the development of the characters was going well. Poor Zee, the childhood friend that “drowned” honestly her storyline was pointless, only to find out at the end what really happened to her. The story was just all over the place after a while.

    A good summer read
This book kept my attention from the first page. Welldeveloped characters and beautiful settings. Several unexpected plot twists throughout the storyline. The ending seemed a bit unlikely.

    Great thriller
I really like her writing style and it was a fun romp. I admit I was guessing which characters would be the worst and I was surprised. My first time reading this author and I will look for more. Great job and thanks to Amazon for the first reads opportunity.

    The book that never ends…..
This was my Amazon First Reads pick for the month of August.Salthouse Place is the story of 3 young girls who were best friends. One day the unthinkable happens and one of those friends is lost, forever. As adults, they carry the trauma of that day with them. They grow apart, dealing with their grief in different ways until one email changes everything. From there we go on a wild ride that eventually spins out of control.I love a good psychological thriller and the fact that this one included a cult was a bonus. The story reeled me in but the further I got into it, the more I found myself in disbelief. I know the question has been asked before, but how can a seemingly normal and intelligent human being get caught up in such an obvious cult? Our main character goes in looking for answers but after a little while, seems to forget why she’s actually there. She fell for the gimmick so quickly that I was almost offended by her weakness. My frustration grew until finally, I just started skimming the story. That’s when exasperation took over. For several chapters, it seemed like the tale had reached its conclusion. With each page turn, I expected the acknowledgments. But it didn’t stop. It kept going on, and on, and on. I seriously didn’t think it was ever going to end. Eventually it did though and all I could muster was a shoulder shrug. That was that. I have nothing else.

    suspenseful but for what
The Salthouse Place was relatable in speaking about not wanting to be an other and small town accepted racism. Book brought up several good conversations about race and sexism. Book was just OK for me. There were too many people to keep track of and I got lost at time. And who names a kid Petal. Also I wasn’t really interested when I got in the plot and reveals. I just kept questioning, why would you care to be apart of this place. But that is just me.

    An Engrossing dive into cultism
It took me a bit to get into this book at first, but once the storyline began to develop deeper, the characters intrigued me and I wanted to know more. Young girls, inseparable as teens and the tragic loss of one leads to drastically different paths for the other two. Ten years later and questions remained unanswered, while another of the trio goes missing. This book takes you deep into a cult life and all the dangers found within its unsuspecting walls. The ending is fairly unpredictable, and leaves you relishing for certain revenge. This was one of this month’s Amazon First Reads choices and I’m giving it a solid 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

  12. Thought it was repeating things that were established, however I couldn’t put the down.

I liked the twist at the end. Would not have guessed the ending.I fast forward the drama in the house.
