The Bestseller

From a New York Times–bestselling author, comes this “highly entertaining tale [with] considerable humor and some cynical fun at the expense of the book business” (Publishers Weekly).

At Davis & Dash, one of New York’s most prestigious publishing houses, five new authors will be published—but only one of them will be a bestseller. They have worked long and hard to write their novels of romance and murder, drama and love, but the story behind the stories is even more exciting. And the vicious competition to get the right agent, the perfect editor, and the choice spot on the bestseller list must be seen to be believed.

From the author of The First Wives Club, this “dishy” novel set in New York’s book publishing industry (Glamour) is a fun behind-the-scenes romp with “lots of romance and revenge” (The Washington Post Book World).

Great insight into the publishing industry
I’m assuming, as a writer, Olivia Goldsmith has some insight into the publishing industry. I loved this fascinating look into this business.I also fell n love with all the characters. I could have read another 500 pages of this book and been perfectly content to do so.I can’t believe someone gave this book 3 stars because the vocabulary was too advanced! What is this, the dumbing down of America?Overall, I’m glad I bought this book because I know I’ll be re-reading this a few years from now. Definitely one of my Olivia Goldsmith favorites and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to any of my book club members.

    Good read
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed and the multiple stories intertwined nicely. The end seems a little too contrived but managed to wrap up all the loose ends.

    Slow to start
This was slow to start — lots of characters to keep track of, not to mention their books. Lots of what I assume to be publisher insider info pre-internet. Which book(s) would come out on top and how? It did pick up in the second half at about the time I nearly abandoned it. But I finished it to find out how the characters and their books fared.

Inside look at the publishing world!
This is the first book I have read from this author. I liked all the different characters and that they all connected in some way. I felt good about the outcome of the book. A little more of the F word than I like. Not sure why this is so prevalent in newer books.

    Like a Summer’s Breeze
Characters you root for and those you hope will get their comeuppance are part of what makes this book oh, so readable and thoroughly enjoyable. Getting the inside skinny on the publishing world, independent booksellers (in today’s world of amazon), writers and the agents that serve them could either inspire or discourage nascent writers. I hope they’re encouraged and take this wild ride to the top of the mountain. I just loved this book.

    Intriguing Read
I really liked this book! I have always loved reading, and I feel like this gave me insight into the behind-the-scenes of what it takes to get published. I was interested in the characters, and I wanted to keep reading to know what happened to them. The ending was very satisfying, even if a little too perfect! Looking forward to trying another book by this author!

    Catty and fun
A librarian friend of mine recommended “The Bestseller,” by Olivia Goldsmith. The late Ms. Goldsmith (she died at age 54 of complications from cosmetic surgery) was best known for her own New York Times bestseller “The First Wives’ Club.”The premise is simple. Five authors have books. All will eventually appear on the Fall list of a major New York publisher. Which one will become the bestseller?A lot has changed in book publishing in the last 15 years, so Ms. Goldsmith’s portrayal of the New York literary scene is hopelessly dated; but it’s still a lot of catty fun for the reader. Ms. Goldsmith intersperses so many real people into the novel that she included an index so the literati mentioned could find themselves referenced without actually having to read the book. The story is charming in a man-hating and predictable kind of way.I had two problems with the book. First, at over 500 pages, it was way too long. At 350 pages this would have been a breathless read. At 506 pages, it was an arduous slog to the finish line. Second, it was not well edited. There were too many examples of this to mention but substituting trooper for trouper was one that is unforgivable. Someone should have known better. If you’re looking for a fun, often hilarious and occasionally touching read about the trials and tribulations of book publishing, The Bestseller is a good choice.

I love Olivia Goldsmiths books. They are over the top but so enjoyable to read. Perfect if you want a little escapism. No matter how dire the situation there is usually a happy outcome.

this was badly in need of a good editor as it was too long and it took forever to get into what little stride it could muster. unusually, it took me a very long time to read- probably should have given up about a third of the way through but really hate to do this, in the hope the book might improve- unfortunately, this did not. none of the characters ever came to life and it remained difficult almost to the end to differntiate between them- simply not an enjoyable or in any way, rewarding read
