The Bone Code: A Temperance Brennan Novel
#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs’s twentieth “brilliant” (Louise Penny) thriller featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, whose examinations of unidentified bodies ignite a terrifying series of events. “This is A-game Reichs, with crisp prose, sharp dialogue, and plenty of suspense” (Booklist).
On the way to hurricane-ravaged Isle of Palms, a barrier island off the South Carolina coast, Tempe receives a call from the Charleston coroner. The storm has tossed ashore a medical waste container. Inside are two decomposed bodies wrapped in plastic and bound with electrical wire. Tempe recognizes many of the details as identical to those of an unsolved case she handled in Quebec fifteen years earlier. With a growing sense of foreboding, she travels to Montreal to gather evidence.
Meanwhile, health authorities in South Carolina become increasingly alarmed as a human flesh-eating contagion spreads. So focused is Tempe on identifying the container victims that, initially, she doesn’t register how their murders and the pestilence may be related. But she does recognize one unsettling fact. Someone is protecting a dark secret—and willing to do anything to keep it hidden.
An absorbing look at the sinister uses to which genetics can be put and featuring a cascade of ever-more-shocking revelations, The Bone Code is “a murder mystery story that races across America at the speed of fright” (James Patterson).

The Bone Code CD.
I really enjoyed listening to this CD story. The author always writes good books and I look forward to receiving it and I was so happy when I got it and enjoyed it thoroughly.

I actually read the book.
I actually read the entire book (which I purchased) including the acknowledgements. I found no anti-vaccine message and no junk science. It’s not my favorite book from this author but it held my interest and I read it almost in one sitting. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in biology, fiction, and forensics, and who is pleased by the author’s writing style. What this book is and is not:1) This book is fiction. Here’s a definition of fiction: literature that “describes imaginary events and people.” The idea of tampering with pharmaceuticals is not new and was not used by the author to suggest that people ignore medical advice from non-fictional medical professionals. Normally people don’t follow any kind of advice-medical, legal, or otherwise-that they read about in a work of fiction. If they did I can think of quite a few works of fiction I would supply to people I don’t like. This book will not prevent people from getting vaccines.2) This book is not based on junk science. Some readers may not understand how science works or they may just not understand the meaning of the term “junk science”. Junk science is (I can’t actually use the word “information” here) blather that claims to be the result of scientific investigation but in fact is not. It is misleading. The acknowledgements section of the book (yes, it’s at the end) clearly describes the sources of information the author used. Unless someone can show that the sources listed there are not real scientists then the term “junk science” cannot be used to describe this book.3) Kathy Reichs is a forensic anthropologist and a teacher. Forensic anthropology is about using information obtained from bones to identify bodies and obtain evidence that may be used to solve crimes. Although I always enjoy the descriptions of skeletal elements, I appreciate the author’s ability to include material from other science disciplines, as well as her deceptively simple explanations of biological processes, included to help the reader understand the book.4) I have read all of the books in this series and will buy the next one also.

Temperance Brennan is fully recovered and back in Montreal!
I just finished this book and it was wonderful. The previous volume (#19) was a bit disappointing. So glad that Tempe is back in Montreal for a majority of this book. That is where the series started. Too many of the recent volumes were set in the Carolinas and had little or no involvement with the original Montreal characters, including Ryan. One question I have is why was there no mention of her sister Harriet/Harry? Harry was a major character in several of the early novels and was usually at least mentioned in later volumes. But no mention in the last few volumes. This was especially evident when Tempe was in need of someone to talk to one night. She ticked off her mom, her daughter Katy and even her ex-husband Pete as being unavailable. She never mentioned Harry! Did Harry die in a previous volume? I am pretty sure that I would remember that if is had happened.

Complicated Details in a Mesmerizing Plot
Temperance Brennan is on the case, trying to discover the identities of four female victims and the killer who wrapped them in plastic and put them into a container to float away. With the help of Ryan, private investigator, and an intrepid police detective named Vislosky, Brennan is determined to find out what happened to the young women and a young girl, two in Canada and two in South Carolina. The trail and clues were twisted and many. I enjoyed the plot itself, but the details about the genomes and genetic alterations were too much for me to fully comprehend. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed seeing Dr. Brennan and Ryan in action again and I especially enjoyed the character of Vislosky, a brusque and no-nonsense detective who has little time for foolishness but all the time in the world to solve crimes. This is a welcome addition to the Temperance Brennan series and I’m confident that fans of Kathy Reichs will not want to miss this one!Disclaimer: I checked out a copy of this book from my local library using the Libby App. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Great Book,
I haven’t read a Kathy Reich’s book in years. I was disappointed in the last one I read. But I certainly enjoyed this one. Many reviewers used the phrase “She’s Back”. While reading, that phrase kept popping into my head. She seems to be back (at least in this book). 3 story lines allow her to expound on 3 types of science and/or general information. DNA and Genetic geneology connect the 4 dead unidentified bodies and help identify them. An uncontrolled Capnocytophga pandemic that is creating havoc in Charleston sets up an excellent platform for vaccine theory. And, she ties all of it up neatly by the end of the book.

Somewhat Confusing
I’ve read several of this author’s novels in the past and liked this series very much. This book, however, I found to to have a rather boring plot and confusing storyline. I had difficulty keeping the characters straight as to who they were, where they lived, and what their purpose and identity was in the story. Disappointing.

This was a riveting read: suspenseful and very believable following the horror of the Covid-19 pandemic. I really enjoy Kathy Reichs writing style. It is a pleasure to read.

I really love these books. They are well-documented novels, displaying the author’s academic and professional background. Highly and easily readable, and even with a kind of “anthropologist” sense of humor

Sempre felice di leggere nuove avventure della d.ssa Brennan. Il libro è scorrevole anche se il finale abbastanza scontato. È stato piacevole notare che la pandemia covid non sia stata predominante sulla storia. Aspetto il prossimo libro.
Jon Naylor –
Another classic action story, and also plenty of background information on DNA mapping and manipulation.
