Phenomenal!
Let me preface this by stating that this type of novel is not something I would normally read, but I bumped into the author on the beach who is an old friend of mine I hadn’t seen in years and asked him if he was still writing screenplays. He replied that he wasn’t and was now writing novels so I bought the book and am so thankful I did or I would have missed out on a truly fantastic and engrossing experience. As anyone who has read my few reviews I am a harsh critic if I think something blows and unafraid to share my opinions. In this case I was blown away. I read the entire book on a 5 hour flight to Kauai. The story is gripping, both in scope, the range and seamless blend of time, locations and diverse characters Alex brought the to life so vividly. I am not ashamed to say it brought me to tears. The writing is eloquent and in many aspects the highest praise I can give: poetic, as I find in some of my favorite authors who are unfortunately few in number.Elephants are such intelligent and truly empathic creatures and his “first person” interior dialog for Ishi the elephant protagonist was astounding well done and believable. I handed the book over to my wife when I was done and she read it over two days and concurred with my assessment with even more enthusiasm.I challenge anyone to read this novel and not be moved.

`A poignant compelling read.
The “Memory of an Elephant” is a multi level narrative word crafted by a master storyteller in flexible timelines with crossover sentient communications. Once I accepted this basic premise, the book was a poignant, compelling read and hard to put down. Struck some chords that I was surprised it reached and I was surprisingly emotional throughout. Thoroughly enjoyable and I would highly recommend it for anyone who is fond of elephants or loves the frailties and nobleness of our species. I will buy this book as a gift for friends.

A novel of substance and thoughtfulness.
Fascinating! Written as a novel, yet includes perspectives and observations from the POV of the elephant, all believable based on what we know to be true of elephants. A most enjoyable read, yet deeply emotional, because of our human incessant need to satisfy our often thoughtless desires at the expense of creation.

Don’t miss this beautiful story!
Beautiful book. Having been to Africa this last year, the depictions of poaching for just ivory is so sickening, but the memories of “Ishi” the elephant are enthralling. You need both to understand how prevalent the slaughter is and that so much more needs to be done to protect wildlife. The story is lovingly and poetically written through the eyes of the elephant. The human’s stories are a little more stereotypical, but when they intertwine with the elephant, it is all emotionally moving. A definite must read. I have checked a few city library systems…not sure why this is not in their systems, but it should be!!!! Would also make a great book club book, so much discussion potential!!

A celebration of life, both the good and bad
A wonderful book, have not enjoyed a book as much as in years. Will revisit again. As some have said, “Heartwarming and heartbreaking”. Yes, true but I think you will get from this book what you seek. For me, smiles and goodness won over tears and sadness. To the author: Thanks for this wonderful gift.Note: A few years ago I had the joy of spending a day in an elephant sanctuary. Elephants to me, are some of the most magnificent and emotionally moving creatures of this earth. This book was a fond revisit of that time and I hope you find the book to give you those same feelings of wonder and hope.

Enjoyed this lovely story of a much loved elephant . If you love all animals, you will love this sweet story. It was an easy read, characters believable & likeable. But, the star was definitely the elephant, Ishi. I just loved him!

Moving and Enlightening
While obviously no one can actually know the thoughts of any sentient being, this tale told by alternating between the thoughts of Ishi the elephant and various of those whose paths cross or intertwine with his, feels authentic. The author knows elephant behavior, and attaches the thoughts that would reasonably accompany it. For that reason, it is an emotional read with loyalties and sympathy to Ishi. There is, of course, an underlying message to protect these beings whose thoughts and behaviors are so close to ours. On a good day. I highly recommend this book.
