    Dark, Evocative and Resilient
Sadie and Will moved to the coast of Maine, when Will’s sister dies tragically. They’re now the guardians to Will’s niece, Imogen, a sullen teen, who resents the abrupt changes to her life. Sadie and Will also have two sons, Otto and Tate. The new family arrangement is awkward and tense, and Sadie resents the move. She’s now a small town physician instead of an ER doctor. She misses the adrenaline and the busyness of city living in Chicago. Will pushed for the move, citing a chance for a fresh start. Their marriage has been strained by Will’s roving eye, and Otto has been troubled and struggling at school. Reluctantly, Sadie had agreed, but the Maine island has proven to be remote, cold and depressing. The house they live in is old and weathered by time and the elements. Everything seems dark, bleak and unrelenting. Sadie becomes forgetful in this morose environment and relationships begin to fray further. When a shocking murder occurs in this quiet, insular town, and on the very street where they live, Sadie redoubles her efforts to try and make Will see that Maine was a mistake. When the locals begin to look at the newcomers with suspicion and as potential suspects, Sadie feels even more trapped. She fears her once well-ordered life is beginning to unravel. Because the neighbor’s assault was so close in proximity, Sadie is often plagued with insomnia. She realizes that she must figure out what happened if she’s ever to have any semblance of peace. Yet, the more she investigates, the more alarming it all becomes. She uncovers harrowing secrets that threaten her life and the family she knows and loves.Kubica’s book is written well, and the story takes the reader to unexpected places. I initially disliked Sadie as a character because she seemed disinterested and distracted, with no time or regard for her children. Yet, because of Kubica’s skill as a writer, my opinion changed as Sadie evolved. By the end, I was rooting for her. This is a complicated, intricate and involved story with several dark elements. It explores the fragility and resilience of the human mind, and how manipulation and abuse can negatively influence perceptions. Kubica handles the mental health aspects with delicacy and care.A good read that took some unexpected turns. Not a light, quick excursion, but rather, a somewhat disturbing journey as Sadie struggles to unearth some painful truths about her own life when she tries to solve the murder of a stranger. The last few lines of the book were particularly evocative, poignant and powerful. Kubica’s beach glass analogy was a beautiful and elegant conclusion to this dramatic tale.

    Beware
OK, I have thoughts…..So, I read my first book by this author recently, which was Just the Nicest Couple. I thought it was great. This book, in contrast, was a tough read for many reasons.First off, if ever a book needed trigger warnings, it’s this one. Detailed, disturbing descriptions of suicide; heart-wrenching child abuse; bullying and school violence – the list goes on. This is a very different book from the last one: IT. IS. DARK. Dark with a capital D. Had I know it was going to be like this, I would not have read it. I found it particularly uncomfortable. I honestly sped through a good portion of it. It did not make me feel good at ALL.**Spoilers Ahead**I suspected the multiple personality thing early on, as soon as the old man told the police he saw Sadie fighting with Morgan and Sadie didn’t remember doing it. The rest came about near the end. This story was just horrifically tragic and creepy. The final ending was positive, but it’s only a couple pages long and you have to go through a helluva ride to get there. That said, I have to hand it to this author. Maybe I didn’t like the story (I really, really didn’t like the story, too disturbing for me), she is a pretty fantastic writer. Her stories are intricate and creative and multi-faceted. I may read more of her books in the future, just need to search and see if anyone else out there thinks they deserve a warning before I do. If a book club read this, they’d definitely need all the wine afterward to wash the gloom away. I would not recommend this book if any of the above-mentioned sensitive issues bother you (that is, graphic suicide, bullying, school violence, inhumane child abuse, severe mental health issues, etc). Not for the faint of heart indeed.

Small-Town Secrets Hit Different When You Live in One
Reading a thriller set in a small town in Maine hits differently when you actually live in one.I gave The Other Mrs. by Mary Kubica four stars. Overall, I really liked it and finished the book feeling satisfied with how everything came together. The small-town Maine setting stood out to me right away. It felt atmospheric and added tension to the mystery in a way that made the story feel believable. I live in a small town in Maine where everyone knows everyone’s business, so the gossip, suspicion, and quiet judgment between neighbors felt very familiar. That dynamic added an extra layer to the story for me.Sadie as a main character didn’t completely work for me. I found her frustrating and honestly didn’t like her very much. At times she seemed unnecessarily mean, especially in the way she treated Imogen. I kept wishing she would show a little more empathy. The mystery itself was engaging, even though I did start to figure part of it out about halfway through. The multiple perspectives worked really well and helped deepen the story while adding tension as everything slowly unfolded. This isn’t an extremely dark thriller. It leans more toward suspense than disturbing, but it still keeps you invested in what’s going on.The ending felt a little over the top, but it was still satisfying and wrapped up the story in a way that made the journey worthwhile.Overall, this was an engaging psychological thriller with a strong sense of atmosphere and a mystery that keeps you turning the pages.

I found this novel much less credible than her previous ones. The mental illness which is plausible from some point on is not treated very thouroughly, and I cant’ stop wondering how her kids did not realize her struggles and her changes of personality.I liked the fact that Mary Kubica chooses to tell the story as usual through different points of views, and in the end we discover they are the same one – apart from the few parts told by the husband Will of course.Overall, it was not as gripping or as interesting as some other novels of her.Loved the writing, though.
