We Were Never Here: Reese’s Book Club: A Novel

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK • “This book is every suspense lover’s dream and it kept me up way too late turning pages. . . . A novel with crazy twists and turns that will have you ditching your Friday night plans for more chapters.”—Reese Witherspoon

A backpacking trip has deadly consequences in this “eerie psychological thriller . . . with alluring locales, Hitchcockian tension, and possibly the best pair of female leads since Thelma and Louise” (BookPage), from the bestselling author of The Lost Night and The Herd.

A Marie Claire Book Club Pick • Named One of the Best Books of the Year by NPR and Marie Claire

Emily is having the time of her life—she’s in the mountains of Chile with her best friend, Kristen, on their annual reunion trip, and the women are feeling closer than ever. But on the last night of the trip, Emily enters their hotel suite to find blood and broken glass on the floor. Kristen says the cute backpacker she brought back to their room attacked her, and she had no choice but to kill him in self-defense. Even more shocking: The scene is horrifyingly similar to last year’s trip, when another backpacker wound up dead. Emily can’t believe it’s happened again—can lightning really strike twice?

Back home in Wisconsin, Emily struggles to bury her trauma, diving headfirst into a new relationship and throwing herself into work. But when Kristen shows up for a surprise visit, Emily is forced to confront their violent past. The more Kristen tries to keep Emily close, the more Emily questions her motives. As Emily feels the walls closing in on their cover-ups, she must reckon with the truth about her closest friend. Can Emily outrun the secrets she shares with Kristen, or will they destroy her relationship, her freedom—even her life?

    B+. A good read.
This is a good book. I give it four (4) stars because many, many chapters were repetitive in its narration. I am a Boomer generation female; parts of the book seemed to be catering to the Millennial generation. That was fine, I understood the references. However, one (1) word the author used didn’t fit any genre or generation; the word, “recon.” The word recon sounds like the author has watched too many detective, murder movies. Recon stuck out to me like a smashed thumb.

    Edge of my seat!
I was afraid and excited to read the next chapter. Very suspenseful! I was glad when I finished but also wanted more.

    An ok read, nothing special.
This book centers around the toxic friendship of 2, almost 30 year old women who have been BFF’s since college. However, the way they behave and talk, they seem better suited to be high schoolers. I am not sure if It was supposed to come off that way, or if the author just doesn’t have the wonderful, thought provoking, can’t put it down, creative writing style one would think it would be, considering this was recommended by Reese Witherspoon’s book club. The same book club that endorsed Little Fires Everywhere (a beautiful, scary, heartbreaking book that really examines mother-daughter relationships); the same club that raved about Where The Crawdads Sing (this book is written so well it’s like you are actually there in the marsh with Kya – if you haven’t read this book yet – read it!!) – We Were Never Here is nothing like those stories. It was slow to start, picked up a little speed in the middle, then came crashing down for an ending so twisty and turns it almost gives you whiplash. The author wanted to shock us and keep us guessing until the end, and she did, but I wouldn’t necessarily call that a good thing. The last pages made the book an ok read. But overall, it was slightly disappointing. This is the kind of book you read on an airplane, or when you have nothing on your bookshelf that you find appealing. The thought was there but the execution was an amateur attempt.

    Good read
First time reading Andrea Bartz work and I thought it was good. Twist after twist. Overall good book. Some things I thought were drawn out but it kept me on my toes thinking what now!?! I would be interested to read more by her that’s for sure. I would recommend this book if you like psychological thrillers

    Great psychological mind bending read!
This book drew me in from the start. The character development was excellent and although there were a lot of repetitive parts in the book, some of it was necessary for plot development and other times I felt I could gloss over it and move ahead. I am a Psych major with a Psych degree and this book did a great job delving into relationships and how people develop into who they are from birth to adulthood …what is innate and what is learned behavior. And how we can sometimes think we really know and love some people only to find out they are not who they truly are…and in this case the outcome is devastating, This book has many twists and turns and I was engaged in the story from start to finish. The book gets in your head and stays with you even after you have finished it! It’s a great read! I highly recommend it!

A fantastic page-turner with one major plot hole (no spoilers)
I loved everything about this book *except* for one thing near the end that made absolutely no sense to me and was a major part of the story. I’d still recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who enjoys great writing, characters and themes. It didn’t spoil it for me at all, it was just a big enough hole to lose a star through ;). Will definitely check out more of the author’s novels.

    A good thriller.
Reese’s book club picks can be hit or miss for me but this one is a hit. In this not too over the top thriller you know where the plot is going, or at least an inkling, and you are waiting for the characters to catch up. Enjoyed this book.

    It’s just OK
SpoilersIt was an OK read, there were parts that were riveting and I could feel the anxiety of the main character, so that part was good. There were slow parts, repetitive parts. The constant mention of misogyny, while a real issue, was over the top and mentioned in places it didn’t fit. The constant repetition of the description of the murders really bogged it down. I could figure out the basic plot after the murder in Chile, I knew Kristen was going to end up being a serial killer or thrill killer, I’d have enjoyed a bit more subtlety in that regard. The ending was very rushed and glossed over. So much repetitive clunk in the middle and then at the end, when the worst actually happens, they’re found out, we get a summary on the fall out and then it’s all wrapped in a pretty bow. There were good parts of this book. Plenty of suspense and anxiety you could feel. I’d have enjoyed more of it without a few needless chapters in the middle.

Predictable, with 90% filler. The characters aren’t like-able either. I will avoid recommendations from Reese Witherspoon‘s new Book Club Picks in the future.

I basically enjoyed this, but if I had to recommend a book to smoebody, I have others I would recommend first. It created a roller coaster of interest for me, and I found the conclusion didn’t feel totally believable. Our book club enjoyed it though, which is why I’ll give it 4/5 instead of 3/5. I would give it 3/5
