Dangerous Habits (Leah Nash Mysteries Book 1)

A deadly secret. A relentless reporter. A truth that might be better left buried.

In the small town of Himmel, Wisconsin, reporter Leah Nash is scraping by, working again at the local paper that she left a decade ago. But when a torrential storm reveals a gruesome secret – a dead nun from the local school for troubled kids – Leah’s quiet life is shattered.

Sister Mattea was no ordinary nun. She had deep secrets that no one knew. Secrets that might connect the nun’s suspicious death with the tragic accident that took Leah’s sister Lacey’s life at the same school years ago.

As Leah delves deeper, she uncovers a web of deceit, corruption, and danger entangling the school’s charismatic leaders, wealthy donors, and even her own boss. The deeper she digs, the more she realizes that her sister’s death was no accident, and the nun’s death was no random event.

As Leah gets closer to the shocking truth, she becomes the killer’s next target. With every powerful enemy she makes, she doesn’t know who she can trust anymore. As she races against time, she must answer one crucial question: Is she willing to risk her life for a truth that could bring her own world crashing down?

In “Dangerous Habits”, the first book in the Leah Nash Mystery Series, Susan Hunter weaves a complex tale of betrayal, vengeance, and a silence that can’t last forever. Great for fans of Lisa Gardner and Karin Slaughter.

    Compelling
Trigger warnings for sexual abuse.Compelling. Condensed review: read it.Stand-alone that is easy to follow and difficult to put down. No graphic brutality, sexual abuse or drag-you-down drama.Great storyline with plenty of twists. Definitely not a cliche.Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and snarky dialogue.“But we don’t hold time in our grasp. Time holds us and often as not lets go when we least expect it.”“It’s not true that you can’t go home again. You can as long as you’re willing to regress from 32 to 13.”“Finding the truth isn’t always the same as finding the answers Leah. It requires great discernment to know which is most important.”“OK. But if you don’t want him … I wonder if he’s heteroflexible?”Not all questions are answered, justice for the innocent and punishment for guilty was not resolved. No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

    Enjoyable, Very Well-Written Mystery!
Leah Nash is a reporter—and a darn good one, too, and when Sister Mattea is found dead, she doubts the official finding of accidental death. Especially since the nun dropped by to see her the week before this “accident” happened. What had she wanted to say? And did it concern what happened to Leah’s sister? Lacey’s death had also been ruled “accidental”. She’d been locked away in the DeMoss Academy, a school for troubled teens, when the death occurred. Leah never doubted the death was anything but what was purported, but now? Now everything’s changed, and if Lacey was murdered, Leah wants the killer behind bars.DANGEROUS HABITS by Susan Hunter was an unexpectedly great surprise. Very intelligently written, it’s a complex story that you have no problem getting into. The characters are well-defined, but just as importantly, there’s an emotional spark running between them. It makes for great dialogue and good interaction.Susan Hunter is an excellent writer. The story sings and a nice pacing is established as clues are revealed and plot twists come out of nowhere. And there are plenty of them in this story about retracing what happened to a troubled teen. Nothing in the story is derivative, and I doubt that anyone is going to figure this one out.I did have two problems with this book. The first is one I have with a lot of fiction, and it’s this: either you have a real character or you have a fantasy one. If you have a real one, what happens has to conform to the physical laws of reality. In DANGEROUS HABITS, Leah Nash is a real one, replete with hopes, dreams, flaws, and heroic flights of fancy. She’s amazing, but there’s no way she could have survived what occurs. The other is that she’s so convinced that she’s right that there’s never a doubt—not even after she’s proven wrong again and again. Wouldn’t there be at least a little bit of hesitancy in thinking someone else guilty? I thought there should be. Anyway, both of these points pulled me out of the story, and turned what could have been a sensational read into a very good one.The ending itself is satisfying — and that makes up for a lot. It’s both logical and surprising. No, I didn’t guess the killer, and thanks to Ms. Nash for cleverly concealing the identity. Because of all the above, I can highly recommend the story—and author—to mystery readers.

    Seek and Find
Leah is like a dog with a bone. She keeps digging for the answers. A well developed plot lets the story flow to its conclusion and introduces some unexpected surprises. Leah is an interesting protagonist with friends who are a variety of individualists. There is a twist at the end that is unexpected. Not a clue. It is a good read.

    A complex mystery
Overall, I enjoyed this book so would give it a solid 3.5 stars. It was well written, had very few typos, contained a lot of interesting characters (I mean, a LOT), the story line kept me guessing and the “main” mystery was tied up nicely in the end. However, there were SO many underlying “stories within the story” that the plot almost resembled one of those Russian nesting dolls. In my opinion, the author could’ve saved a few of those plots and characters for a whole other book. Also, the main character, Leah, was almost stupidly headstrong at times which I found a bit annoying. For a seasoned reporter, she also jumped to erroneous conclusions far too quickly. However, with all that said, the book DID hold my interest and I was impressed that the author was able to weave all the story lines together into one. I would definitely read another of this author’s books.

    A good mystery
`Dangerous Habits’ was a thrilling book with a lot of mystery. The story line was pretty good. It had a ton of mystery. I wasn’t sure what would happen next except that Leah would get in the middle of it. She uncovered quite a bit, and sometimes I had to remember who was who. There were a lot of passing characters, so I had to keep notes to keep them straight. I understand the reasoning, so it made sense. The story overall was intriguing and written well. The characters were a mix of good, bad and in-between. I look forward to reading more of the ‘Leah Nash Mysteries’.

This is the first book in what I hope will be a long series about Leah Nash, investigative reporter.Susan Hunter grabbed my attention on the first page and didn’t let go until the end.She has created some wonderful characters, especially Miguel, the gay photographer. In fact most of the characters are likeable and you want to know more about them.I thought I’d determined the identity of the killer a few times, but each time I was wrong. As for the ending, it left me open mouthed!I look forward to reading book 2 in this series, “Dangerous Mistakes”.

Oh my, the twist and turn. I started reading the book and left it aside thinking I’ll come back to it later. I had too much coffee and couldn’t sleep so read the rest of the book in one session. Leah annoyed me with her “instinct” detective work. Susan cleverly weaved and thread the plots in this book and I had no clue who had done what till the end of the book. I love Miguel with his Spanish phrases. I enjoyed it immensely and going to buy her next book for my vacation.

This book had so many twists and turns it was a ride to keep up but the author keeps you hooked to the very end. The main character is strong but has hidden depths and inner fears which keep you routing for her throughout. A clever, gripping and fulfilling read.
