Her seventeen year-old daughter Jules, falling in love for the first time with a local boy—and forging a new path that will take her to uncharted places. And Carter—a man Desi knew long ago, before she expunged him from her life for good.
All hurtling toward events none of them can undo.
Engaging, propulsive, and with a dramatic, heart-pounding final act, Secrets of Our House is a dazzling novel, richly-drawn, that shows no matter how hard outside forces may shake you, the bonds of family are stronger than the harshest winds.

Couldn’t Put Down! Visualized EVERY Character & Scene
This book had me wanting to rush through paragraphs and flip flip flip those pages! I had the best visuals in my mind the entire time of all the characters – along with the beauty setting and mysterious Black House. I am a busy mom with a horrible attention span and this book had me desperately wanting to get to the next chapter but also enjoying the chapter I was in. The secrets of this house were NOT what I expected at all!! I even sent a photo of the end of a chapter to the author with a WHOA emoji along with a select GIF of astonishment!! Then another secret came and again!! Blown away!! I can’t wait for Rea’s next book. Her writing is incredible and her books are ones you cannot put down.

Great read!
I love the mother/daughter battle that we are able to see from both Desi and her daughter as well as the family dynamics that surround them! This was such a unique story and setting with so many twists and turns!

Such emotional storytelling with the best setting ever: The Black House
I enjoy every one of Rea Frey’s books and her latest, Secrets of our House, was so full of emotion that I found myself several times tearing up at what was happening between mothers, mothers & daughters, and lovers also. There are several intense scenes in here that had me on the edge of my seat and flying through the pages to see what would happen. Survival skills at its best. What a fabulous book, Rea! Five stars!

Just Okay
I read this on the beach and I think it’s perfect for that. It holds your interest enough, but didn’t blow me away by any means.

Slow to Start but Exciting Conclusion
This book was a little slow to get going, but once it did it was an intriguing domestic drama. The narrative is divided between two main characters: Desi, an exacting home designer who is in a troubled marriage to Peter, and Jules, their young adult daughter. They live in Chicago, but are spending the summer at their house in a small town in North Carolina. Jules is supposed to be heading to college in the fall, but she is in a budding relationship with Will, whose mother is dying from cancer, and Jules doesn’t want to go away to school. The book goes back and forth between the two perspectives. There are a few surprises, but I wasn’t a fan of how everything played out in the end, it seemed very unrealistic (view spoiler) I think if the pacing had been a bit more even rather than such a long, long buildup, I probably would have liked this book better. As it is, the last third is incredibly exciting and gripping, but the first two-thirds is sloooowwwwwwwww.I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator Samantha Desz is excellent giving voice to Desi and Jules. She has narrated Frey’s previous novels and does a great job with them. She gives the female characters a strong demeanor rather than whiny, which is how some of the interactions could have come across with a less skilled narrator. If you like domestic drama and can handle a slow build, you might want to give this one a try.I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Good story about relationships in a family and how secrets undermine them.
I enjoyed the main character, Desi and her struggle to control her family’s vacation.

Put this author on auto-buy
Sometimes I feel like my reviews become repetitive. For example like this one, SECRETS OF OUR HOUSE @reafrey @stmartinspress. Every time I read one of her books I know I am in for a brilliant read, heart pounding drama, tons of secrets and lies with an unforgettable ending. Well, this one hit that mark as well.Rea writes domestic suspense the likes of nobody I know, and she keeps you all-consumed the entire time. This tale of Desi and her husband Peter heading to vacation for 3 months over the summer in their beautiful NC vacation house – trying to save their loveless marriage, seems like a tale we’ve all heard before. But with their 17 year old daughter in tow, and the drama of her falling in love for the first time with a local boy, then Desi’s brother showing up with Carter, the one man she wished never got away, you can only imagine how the tension in this house builds to a breaking point. It’s not your same old domestic thriller. This book was intense, emotional and quite gripping. Everything I expect in a suspenseful family drama, and everything I’ve come to expect from Rea Frey. This is where the review gets repetitive. Rea’s books are on auto buy for me. She tells tales that are relatable yet always take you by surprise, and she always hits the mark, keeping you engaged to the very end. I love her books, and this one absolutely did not disappoint. If you are a fan of domestic drama, a fan of Rea, need something to spark your reading, or all of the above, definitely pick this one up. You won’t want to put it down.
